Thinking about making a snare drum, but what material, snare wires, bearing and depth should I use for a fat and "ringyish" 70's rock sound (VanHal1)?

I am making a group with some people on the internet and my cheap Basix Classic Series 14x5 snare sounded like (yk what). Put some new heads and tried playing with the snare wires and now it sounds better; but I messed up the snare wire. In anyway, I wanna build my own snare, that sounds like a 1970's rock punchy and "ringyish" snare (check video for example)

I was thinking about using brass or aluminum to make that type of sound, and using a Pinstripe Ebony tom drumhead as batter
But for the bearing, depth and snare side, I dont know...
Please help me!!

For "ringish" you may want to try an Emperor head, or an Ambassador dampened to taste. A Pinstripe may not give you enough ring.

I've tried a Pinstripe batter on a snare a few times, and it's certainly "a" sound but I've had better results with a generic Ambassador or Emperor-type head and (maybe) a little more muffling IF I'm wanting a general snare drum sound.

Tama SLP, Pearl Sensitone, Ludwig Acrolite, Sonor Kompressor all make affordable aluminium snares. Also check out vintage Premier Hi-Fi and 2000, these are hidden gems in terms of aluminium snare.

what about the supralite? some people recommended me (cuz its like supraphonic but cheaper?)
The Supralite is steel as opposed to the 402's aluminium "Ludalloy", but it's one of the best regarded steel snares out there. Punches way above its weight and is within your budget.

Other well-regarded steel snares that might give you what you're looking for: the Yamaha Stage Custom steel snare, the Tama Metalworks black steel snare, Metalworks 8" deep stainless or SLP Big Black steel. All within your budget (and don't forget, you can also look for used drums).

Go with one of the ones recommended already. You can get more specific when you've got the budget for it.

Yeah....these guys know their stuff....building is expensive.
BUT....a used 6.5 Supralite........is so much cheaper.....and pretty great too....for what you are looking for.
Good Luck Sir.

What material is this snare made out of? I'm looking for it, and all I'm finding is a Classic Series drum set. That comes with a wood snare.

If you're on a strict budget, I don't see this approach as being very cost effective.

Cheapest Aluminum shell I can find is $118. Brass is even more. Then you need hoops, snare, throw off, butt plate, lugs & tension rods.
Please help me!!
$160 will get you a new Yamaha 14x6.5 Stage Custom steel snare. You can find used steel snares for less.
hmm, to close this, what about the black panther snare by mapex?
Which one? Made of what? Cost?

Well idk, I have been looking at the series but idk what precise model

Worldmax black hawk NOB. 14 X 6.5 if you want a great snare for that AVH sound but don't want to break the bank.

You really can't go wrong with a 402 though which is his sound.
