Theater gig again...

So if the people who hired you to do a musical last year call you back as the one and only person asked to do the job, you might take it they were happy with how it went.

Whereas Rocky Horror is a pretty well-known and famous musical, the one we're doing this year is pretty edgy never-made-it-to-Broadway stuff. Behold... Bat Boy, the Musical.

I just received the score and the original cast recording to begin studying (now) for a July 31st curtain. I'll be posting from now through the show on the prep, rehearsal schedule, etc. if that sounds interesting to any of you.

Do you have any footage of you playing w/ Rocky Horror?

I played Bat Boy in college. There's a pretty good range of fun music in it. The best part might be the 70's porn music to accompany the cast dressed as animals pantomiming sex with each other.

Thanks to you all. No, unfortunately, only one small clip has appeared and that was shot with a phone. Can't really make out any of the music that clearly, and besides which, I can only be seen for about 45 seconds by the audience during the entire play. The band's joke is that we came nine nights and got to see nine minutes of the musical -- but really, the same minute over and over.

The tech guy at the theater is looking for a CCTV for us for this year.

Usually the first step after the call is the Dropbox share. This is where Don, the producer, throws his virtual doors wide and lets me come play in his toybox. We're going off the original cast recording for this one (I pointed out a London cast recording Don wasn't aware of). The score, as is usual in off-Broadway shows, is primarily piano and vocals with some other important cues such as "Rhodes", "timpani", and "bass drum" noted (see below).

Taking a page from theater, my first real job is to find some time to sit down with the printed score and the entire soundtrack and read through the score as I listen to the soundtrack, akin to a script readthrough. Since I am looking at original score and original cast recording, I don't expect a lot of changes from the one to the other. I also just crossloaded the soundtrack to iTunes and Google Play as a playlist (thus ensuring I will be hearing these songs in my sleep come July).

One secret weapon we had for Rocky which we don't have this time is our guitarist, Steve, who kind of makes a living travelling from city to city playing the Rocky Horror gig. Man, he could have rewritten the score from memory. He is not on board for this, although the same keys/MD and bass player will be back.

So besides the new guitarist, we'll probably be bringing on a second keys player for this show, since there are layered keys in several songs. I'll be trotting out the Ludwigs for the first time, and possibly my Yamaha floor tom as a timpani substitute. No makeup this time, though, and probably a more theater-like pit wardrobe (although since we're behind curtains, it probably doesn't matter much).

More as I get it. Exciting.

Very cool Al, congrats on the call back. Are you just being given a lead sheet or is there an actual percussion score?

As depicted -- this is the way the score is presented for every song. I will be doing some down-and-dirty transcriptions of what seems like key parts, but my charts will be more akin to what I did with Rocky, counting out measures or repeats of riffs and with notes such as "mf spang-a-lang ride, 4x floor, 16 bars, 1 & a 2 & a fill". I will probably have more detailed charts than with Rocky, however, because I'm less familiar with the songs. It won't make sense to everyone, but it's only meant to make sense to me, so it's all good.
