The "new" wave of fake drumming epidemic

That's my feeling, even if the context is as a solo drummer like Terry Bozzio. But he does that in-person.

I don't mean to disparage YT drummers per se, some of them are technically excellent. But to what end? They undoubtedly monetize the views to some degree, but is that a living? I mean, do they make six figures like a touring drummer might make? And does their solo drumming in a remote scenario really satisfy their inner muse? Does playing with other musicians even occur to them?
i have two opinions on this

1. its marketing - quite a few famous youtube drummers will go on to be the touring drummers or join existing bands, which is great.
2. They have their own bands and from what ive seen, they're usually very, very average because you cant do the same kind of hyper-chops driven playing in a band scenario. And then you're just left with (usually) bland instrumental metal.

Wait...are we saying that what we see on the internet might not be real?

I leave all the mistakes in my videos.. and every time I watch them it makes me cringe but.... it also makes me try harder to do better on the next video. I watched some of these videos about other drummers editing their productions and it's honestly kinda sad but I get why they do it also to make it the best of the best.

Why is doing a YouTube video different from recording for an album or something? Even the best drummers glue together a "best of" of multiple takes to create what you hear on an album. For an album or video, you want it to be as perfect as possible. In a live situation little mistakes go unnoticed. I watched Gavin Harrison lose a stick live and recover without really hearing anything that distracted from the overall band performance. But he wouldn't keep that for an album. And even leaving aside Instagram/YouTube, I think guys are making professional careers recording drum tracks in studio. Just to say, there are multiple ways to navigate a drum career and only some of the involve playing live.

I do agree though that it would be nice for educational videos and stuff for people to be up front about it.

Don‘t forget the beyond might be an economic interest. For example there is a RAW & UNEDITED T-shirt on sale for 22$ from the Lord.

I like the idea of shaving my ego by publicly exposing my drumming 'warts'...but then, i don't make $ from my drumming...so i have the luxury.

I would also opine that the humanity of error can enhance...

Case in point, search up the 'The Sky Is Red" PlayThrough on Youtube by Baard Kolstad...

The Sky is Red

...around 6:17 or so.

Have a look at the 'China Incident'

In that sea of jaw lowering fun, to see that humanity gives context and breaks the hypnotic denial/desensitization i tend to drop into when seeing very interesting work.

I would dare to say that it is enhanced by the 'error'.
