The kind of music that features floor toms is...?

Besides your standard tribal grooves, are there any examples of modern music where floor toms play a prominent part of a drummer's and/or a band's sound, whether through groove, frequent fills or otherwise.

I think it can cool as an alternative to the hi-hat during a verse. check out my band Plagues. In the second verse i first play on the floor tom, then step it up to the hats. we play hardcore/metalcore. pretty contemporary genres.

Metal?

The floor tom, in respect to a lot of bands, is basically a smaller bass drum you can hit with your hand. It's extremely popular to have it be a satisfying thump, but I prefer to have it have the same attack that my bass drum does.

So I'd say... metal, heavy-rock, etc.

it's really common in irish music and modern irish music for drummers to use the floor toms alot, probably becuase it's the closest thing we have to a bodhran.

flogging molly 7 deadly sins, fast forward to 1:56 there is an extended breakdown featuring floor toms.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh5gtGk9XZ8 the pogues - sally maclennane the drummer only has a floor tom and a snare. he did alot of tracks like this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh5gtGk9XZ8 drop kick murphys - shipping up to boston (tons of floor tom on the main riff)

hardcore punk bands use them quite a lot. quite similar to the way flogging molly use them, just faster. they use them to replace the hi hats etc.

I love riding the floor tom and I pine for the days when I could do that on a regular basis in my old bands. It's great for non-ambidextrous drummers because it allows us to play open-handed.

Here's a 1987 example when our singer was going through his Cramps phase. Pls excuse wildly sexist lyrics. At the time I didn't care about the words - I just played drums and it was fun to play!

White Stripes ???

how has no one said WS. near enough everything she plays is on there :p

What about Muse? I am not familiar with all of their music but from the songs I heard there seemed to be a lot of 'riding on the floor tom' grooves.

not really he uses tom snare build up in creshendos and occasionally for riding like in starlight but rarely

White Stripes all the time, Travis Barker's done a ton with 'em in his rap remixes, hardcore punk uses toms for vamps constantly. Chris Adler is also pretty dang slick with tom grooves. George Kollias as well, since Nile's music has an Egyptian slant.

Ever hear of The Locusts? Not really my cup of tea, but *breathless* the guy's busy. Playing on a 4-piece with two floor toms.

Hrm, interesting. He's sortof in the vague direction I'd like to go in, except about 50% faster and a bit more chaotic.

As a sidenote, I used to hate toms... it's amazing how much the new 18" I got has changed my perspective, and my opinion, so much.

Ah I love the locust, always thought Gabe was an abosolute legend on the set.

Anywho you can hear tom beats in many many different forms of music, plenty of indie, rock and metal bands use tom beats. I use them alot in my band, just to create a different feel mostly.
