OK cats! Lets make it happen! If anyone has big band experience here I would love to hear you playing. Big band is one of my all time favorite things to play. Kind of grew up on it. And its so exciting for drums. Maybe it would be nice to start a thread about this. Your own performances or Favorite performances from players we all love! I will start with one of my favs!!!

That was just great, Phil! I envy big band drummers, having had no such experience myself. I've always been a small-combo drummer, and a pretty run-of-the-mill one at that. It's got to be a gas, propelling a band of that size playing charts like that. That takes real chops! Yes, it makes me rather jealous.

My favorite big band is the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Such hip charts. Check out "Don't Git Sassy" from their Live at the Vanguard set.

Thanks for the clip, it's very inspiring.

We are now in the process of recording and mixing a new CD with the DC all-star big band Swing Machine. Samples to follow as soon as I get them.

I'm not a big band drummer, but I've played one on stage...

Seriously, my last big band experience - and the first I'd had in awhile - was doing the X-mas version of this: http://www.theratpacklivefromlasvegas.com/. I had such a blast playing that show. There wasn't a lot of flash and dash, it was just great to dig into all those classic arrangements. Like you, Phil, I grew up on the stuff, but I almost never get a chance to play it.

Saw these guys live at a jazz festival near me. Wayne Bergeron was on first trumpet and had given a clinic at my high school a week before so a good amount of us went and saw. Wow...tight group and really had fun with what they were doing. Bergeron was crazy good....

There are some tracks of me playing with Swing Machine, a DC based big band. The tracks should start playing as soon as the site is open. Listen to the tracks in full as they fade in and out.

The first four are from our new CD (which is still being mastered). The last two were from a rehearsal (promo tracks for gigs).

As you're listening, open the photos link in a new window and you can see some pics of the recording session at Bias Studios.

Jeff,

Holey Moley Foley....

Truth be known, I HATED swing/ Big Band music as a kid, as that was all I heard/was exposed to from my folks, but nowdays I absolutely LOVE it---it has to be the happiest, most uplifting music in the history of mankind. (hey, the world needed something to lift spirits during WW2!)

Satin Doll kicked ass, and In The Mood was done to the 9's. All the other tracks were equally good, if not better. I have to "kudo" you on the drum dynamics, and "feel".

The precision was spot on, and if any of the Big Band masters (Goodman, Dorsey Bros, etc.,) were alive today, I know they would want you in their bands.
HELLUVA job, dude! Wow, just WOW!

Cheers,
C. P.
