That smug feeling when...

... the bandleader/songwriter raises an eyebrow at you carting a few snares and three pairs of hi-hats into the studio...

...but then hears both his sloshy heavy-rock drone guitar song and his poppy synth-drenched 80's homage song stylistically pulled off to perfection, and gives you a dozen huzzahs for a job well done.

(They do both sound brilliant, if I'm honest. Thanks, sound engineer.)

Request granted. Here's the first verse and chorus of each. Both are working mixes and have not been mastered, but in the case of the drums, I'm already pretty happy. (If there are suggestions, though, fire away.)

The first, "Instinct for Survival", is the heavier song, using my patented 16" Frankenhats (Project 391 thin crash over A Custom Projection crash) and a Mapex Sledgehammer snare tuned low.

The second, "Suffer in Silence", is a poppier 80's song. The songwriter was looking for a quintessential 80's sound, so I chose 13" K/Z hats and my Ludwig Standard aluminium snare tuned quite high with no muffling. (Later, he commented that it sounded very "Stewart Copeland".)

Drums on both are my Ludwig Standards.

This may be the first time I heard you play Aaron.
Are they your Ludwig Standards? Click track? Good job on the time.
Nice songs too, mixed so the vocal is easily heard. Pleasure.

Thanks, Larry. Yeah, I haven't done much recording that I'm proud of, and I worked hard to get ready for these sessions. They are clicked, and they are on my Standards. There's at least two more songs to track for this EP, and I expect to be in the studio again sometime this spring to get that done.

The sound without mastering is already very good, I like it, everything sounds clear and well separated, the drums isn't too backward and its sounds is perfectly reproduced, meaty. The snare sound on "instinct" is great, makes me think of Run like hell by P. Floyd. Dry & fat.
