Stick Tricks While Playing, Pro Level.

I can see what you're trying to do. There's nothing wrong with having fun and not taking it too seriously.

On the other hand, I'm struggling to feel your groove. I've looked through a few of your videos and it seems to be a bit of a running theme. In all honesty, whilst there's a time and a place for stick tricks, it's the playing that really matters.

+1.Stick tricks are great, but when they take away from the performance, then they have to take a back seat.I appreciate your attempt, but for me,the time was all over the place, and I never got a sense of a groove at all.

Good effort though.

I'm still under the strong impression that stick tricks should stay to marching band and drum corps. But hey, to each their own.

IMHO stick tricks only impress me as the right thing to do if you are otherwise killer on the drums. Otherwise the time it takes to learn and perfect them would be better spent on getting better. The OP video is creative but not for me.

I agree 100% percent and I have seen Tommy Lee from Motley Cru 4 times and whenever he started his big stick trick, raise the drums into the air and turn them upside down, I went to take a piss.

Watching that Steve Smith video I starting hearing it like a normal person would and I just thought 'what the hell is this horrible hissing mess?!

But... from a drummers point of view when he got the stick to roll down his arm and back up, wow! So much room for error! Have to be brave to do that although he's probably never done it wrong once, ever!
Impressive.

I love stick tricks when they're done right and don't affect the groove or look like you're trying to steal the limelight at times you maybe shouldn't.
Me, I' terrible at stick tricks but, can't deny they look cool a hell at times!

Also, that Jimmy Vincent doesn't half look like a young Buddy Rich! I just want to cry when I hear the way they tune their drums... pet hate, can't help it!
He looked one hell of a showman though, had me tapping my feet!

Thing about stick tricks is that although many drummers don't like them (myself definitely not included), they do catch the eyes (and hopefully ears) of non-musicians. And let's face it, we're stuck at the back of the stage, we need all the tricks we can get to get people to notice us :)

My personal favourite trickster is still Seven Antonopoulos. I've stolen a few of these moves for sure, but I'm nowhere near as fluent:

Will Hunt is also a fun guy to watch:

And of course (as mentioned earlier in the thread), Zoltan Chaney, who is just a complete and utter madman:

Steve Moore is phenomonal....I've collared him on Facebook just so I know if he's ever over here in the UK. I would love to meet him.

That windmilling stuff he does in his jacket suit....it's one of the greatest pieces of drumming showmanship I've ever seen.

And, going off what I read of him on FB, a really decent, stand up, guy also.

I enjoy watching guys like Shannon Larkin and Morgan Rose who are as much a part of the show as the rest of the band. Its a combination of stick sticks and exaggerated arm motions that make it enjoyable.

On the other hand I find the Halestorm drummer to be incredibly annoying. They opened for Chevelle and I literally couldn't watch him. I had to avert my attention elsewhere.

Steve is a nice guy, I've known him since before the YouTube stuff hit, he's been doing this for a while. Doing all of the overt acrobatics and still sounding like he's just playing comfortably is pretty amazing. If I did anything to disrupt my natural flow, it would sound like it!

I saw Zoltan Chaney over 20 years ago and he hadn't perfected his thing yet. It totally messed with the groove and feel of every song they played. I got a nervous twitch just listening to it.

It might be a bit of over kill but I have nothing bad to say about his playing now.
