No drummer had a greater impact or influence on me in my formative years than Steve Gadd. I'm going to be digging his music all day today in celebration.

Currently on the playlist: Chick Corea, Dear Alice.

Happy Birthday, Steve!

Make that 2 of us. My parents were record dealers and I was like a kid in a candy store each time they brought home albums. My only concern was to keep any album he was on for any track for myself. I had gazzillions it seemed.

D,

There was a record store in Ferndale called Sam's Jams that sold used records when I was young. I used to go there every weekend with a musician buddy of mine. One day, I stumbled across a used copy of Chick Corea's Mad Hatter, which was OOP at the time. All the experienced drummers I knew told me that was the record I needed to get, so this was a big moment for me. And I bought it for $2!

Anyway, we stopped at a music store on the way home and I made my buddy open his trunk so I could stash the album in there while we browsed the music store. My buddy asked me, "Do you really think someone is going to break into the car for that album?"

Sometimes, it's easy to forget that not everyone cares about this stuff like we do :)

8Mile,
That's a great album, the Mad Hatter. I don't know about you, but my favorite on that one is Humpty Dumpty, the track which really turned me on to Steve Gadd. Maybe it's me, but I don't understand why that track doesn't get talked about very much.

Oh, yeah. That was the one for me, too. I read an interview with Dave Weckl back in the 80s, when he was first coming onto the scene, and he cited hearing that song as a major moment for him. I've mentioned it on these forums before, too.

Gadd's take on straight-ahead jazz is unique. He doesn't sound like anyone else when he plays it. His ride phrasing, his comping; it's all very different. But it works, and it swings hard.
