Stacking crashes on ride cymbals: any good combos?

I was wondering if any folks have found good combinations of stacking a crash on a ride cymbal. Look like what this awesome drummer has done here (perhaps an HHX crash on a vintage Zildjian?) ...

I think one big hurdle is to get the bell sizes to work out right. Maybe need to get a crashable, trashy flat ride underneath the crash ...

Thoughts or experiences people want to share?

Great set of threads. Will definitely have to take a look as I am trying to figure out how to mount a top hi-hat on my china cymbal given that the threads aren't long enough to reach all the way through from the inverted china to the top of the hi-hat. May have to use a remote hat type mount ...

The cymbal stack that I'm referring to above looks like a case where the crash and the ride are sitting directly on top of one another. The bells of most of my rides are too big to seat a crash directly on top and touching. Maybe need to do a flat on the bottom or two thin rides. Not sure.

For a china stack you'll most likely need to pick up an xhat stand. I fooled around with the idea a while ago and stopped rather quickly when I realised I needed a hat stand to mount them on.

A flat ride could work, though here's something else you might like to try as well. If you invert the ride and place a non-inverted china on top you could achieve a similar effect. This would probably require an xhat stand though.

Good ideas. I guess if I go china-stack route (e.g., as opposed to crash-crash or crash on ride), then an x-hat type thing is probably necessary. Seems like if there were a simple screw on gizmo that could go on the existing cymbal stand threads that would work, much like one can replace the hat hat rod on DW hat stands with either long or short rod. Been also staring at my Aquarian cymbal springs to see if there might be a way to seat the cymbals on top of one another an touching ...

I would think any flat or mini-cup ride would be a good "stacking buddy" for most crashes. The trick with any stack is to get them touching at or near the outer edges and by default create a little air pocket inside that acts like a resonating chamber (or whatever).

Mikecore,

Interesting comment on the minicup ride. I don't have too much experience with those, as I've mostly gravitated to flat and traditional bell-type rides. I will have to investigate the minicups more (e.g., in terms of what it does to the overall cymbal sound, if there is a common characteristic among minicups) ...
