OR...you could buy new, modern drums made at a state of the art ISO 9001 factory with tolerences of .000002mm that come out perfect and sound much better than any vintage drum ever made.

True. And I have done exactly that. I'm just working on this vintage Ludwig thermagloss kit right now. It has a vibe I can't replicate on new stuff, regardless of how perfect the new stuff is.

+ another 1 on using cotton. I've never had any issues arise. I did this when restoring my early 70s Ludwig kit about 8 years ago. Cotton still in place and no buzzing or rattles at all.
