Some Bo news

Yes how much can or can't you "deviate".
You know "deviation" is so important to a drummer ;)

Even a movie about it..

I don't really deviate from what's been done. I figure the actual band already did the hard work of creating the stuff for people to buy in to, all I'm doing is giving them what they expect to hear. I can deviate with the best of them, but at some point you learn how to stop doing that and do what's right. It's that age-old question: how far can you deviate before the audience just walks out? I remember Bill Bruford saying in an interview, "King Crimson is the only band where I can play in 17/16 and still stay in a decent hotel" - which is basically to say that he wants to do that, but you can't survive by only getting to do it in your closet. I suppose there are degrees of deviation, but I've noticed in every band I've ever played in, what if everybody decided to deviate? Wouldn't you hate it if the bass player played a different bass part every time you played a hit song for the audience? Or if some other member did something different? THat's kinda why its a band, right? A group of individuals coming together to execute one idea to produce a song?

But there is a Moment "difference". playing in clubs you may bring a different snare or a different cymbal..
Is each night different how so? in a Tribute band..
kinda regimented isn't it..

I dunno I just waiting for my fake grass to dry..
That's why I sometimes refer to what I do as work. There's a certain level of craft that goes with providing a client with what they want. And then you're monetarily compensated for providing that craft. The booking agents who book tribute bands aren't looking for jazz improvisers. If they want a Fleetwood Mac tribute act, they definitely don't want Fleetwood Mac on Steroids. If that means I don't flash my Bonham chops while playing Whip It, then that's what that means.

I still say going out to play drums doing anything, is better than digging a ditch to pay the mortgage ;)

I've been playing in tribute bands since 2010, covering Heart/Zeppelin, Bad Company/Paul Rodgers, The White Stripes, Stevie Nicks. The tribute scene is a small world and bands often share members. One of my guitarists has been in 3 of my tribute bands. It's a lot of fun and has a built-in audience, so I've been fortunate to play some great venues (headline House of Blues and other Live Nation venues) and festivals, tour, etc. I've run into a few egos, which always strikes me as odd. It's best to remember why we do this -- to pay tribute to the original musicians. It's quite an honor to play note-for-note drum parts by the likes of Simon Kirke, Michael Derosier, Bonham, etc., some of my biggest influences. That's my attitude. Total respect. And tribute bands are about getting the details right. Easier said than done for many people. I could probably write a book on how to make a successful tribute band by now. LOL

And BTW, I've also played original music, recorded original albums, covers, worship, etc. Each type of band has required different skills and discipline. It's all made me well-rounded.

Anyway, have fun and enjoy the ride.

I think we were all worried about what was happening then. Something I think will
Never happen again.
It didn't affect me that much except for having to wear the mask, during that time, my wife and I were considered essential personnel, so we still had to go to work, she even got another job offer (and took it) were she doubled her salary, then I was deployed so I was getting paid more as well, on top of that we were getting stimulus checks, and my sister was renting a room in my house. I never before had made so much money in my life. Then we moved to GA, my salary went down because of the cost of living when compared to Ca, my wife worked remotely from home to that company in CA, then she got laid off, so much less money coming in, then she bought (we bought a franchise) and the first year projection is around $500k...mind you I'm still active duty for another year and a half, then I retire after 22 years. Then I will become my wife's employee (right now I'm the IT manager). So again, things happen tor a reason.

Bo, you seem a hairs breadth away from producing...you should assemble a stable of tribute bands and 'crack that whip'!

...start paying off an all new mortgage!

Talking Heads have a great a catalogue to dig into. Nice contrast to the Devo project.

Lots of work to get it going, but potential for some good times.

Agreed!

And you can save your back a little by omitting the ride cymbal if you want; I think Chris Frantz only had crashes on his kit!

"Heard about Pittsburgh Pa?"

lol nothing happening there
except Drum Foundry Direct : )

"Life During Wartime"

Take Me To The River Drop me in the water

One of the things I love so much about "Life During Wartime" is that while the lyrics at first seem to be about guerilla fighters in some dystopian future—and maybe that's indeed what they are about—they could also, with only a bit of poetic license (and what young artist doesn't have at least a bit of that?) refer to a young band struggling on the road:

High on a hillside, the trucks are loading
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
This ain't no Mudd Club, or CBGB
I ain't got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, PA?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there

I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send no postcard
I ain't got time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
We blended in with the crowd
We got computers, we're tapping phone lines
I know that that ain't allowed

We dress like students, we dress like housewives
Or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now
I don't know what I look like

You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
You ought to get you some sleep

Burned all my notebooks, what good are notebooks?
They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive
