Simon Phillips solo - HD

Man i love his playing so much... and he's one player that inspires me to practice more.

Its like I want to personally thank him for doing this and being this good. Thanks, Andy, for sharing this....just awesome!
Yes, he's a bit good, & a really accommodating gentleman of the highest order.

As a bit of background, I spent some time with Simon the evening before his performance. I asked him what his plan was for the show. He told me he had a couple of tracks he was going to play through, but for the solo (this video), he was going to essentially jam it, and base it on interplay between various elements rather than anything constructed.

For me, like most of us, Simon is at his best in a musical context rather than a solo context.

ahh, that's great info, i was actually just going to ask if guys like him actually have a set solo that they perform or wing it on the night.. I usually really dislike solo's but his i love. I have watched a lot of his videos and he seems like a really nice guy.

Loving that kit setup...although with those toms so flat i would be all rims all night :)

He's doing a clinic about 3 hours from me, on May 30... I wish I could arrange the time to go.

(Of course, I missed out on a Todd Sucherman clinic in my home town last month cuz I had a gig, grrrr.... Rich Redmond is going to be doing one here next week, I'm hoping to get to that one, with any luck!)

The green sparkle returns.

Saw him with the old green sparkle on the falling in between tour.

He's one of those few drummers that you know its him and always have done. Check out smallcreeps day by mike rutherford.....tasty! He still has the same sound 40 years on!

10:20 - 12:20 = just sublime!

Considering Simon's stature, & the height of those toms, it's quite a bit of arm elevation involvement.

Me too :) I'm pretty sure the green kit is a UK backline specifically held for Simon, but I can check that out.

A very nice solo, but I can't help remembering a clinic i watched about 30 years ago. He was flying around the drums backwards and forwards with the bass drums doing doubles.
He's doing more melodic latin stuff here, but he was racing all over the set many years ago.

I think his talent and skill is much, much more than what he did in this solo.

Maybe that just means that even the most incredible players on this earth, when getting older, realise even better than before that more notes is not necessarily meaning more music..

Allthough feels a little uncomfortable to say something like that about a player like him, given his amazing history of playing drums..

Nice video btw..

So Andy you were watching this in person? This is a great recording but you just can't record that "live experience"-I'd love to seen this in person. Man his kit sounds fantastic-those toms look and sound huge. What is that small snare?-a 10 in popcorn snare-really like how he was using that. Takes a lot of creativity and skill to play that long of a solo and keep audience attention. Thanks for posting-and I plan on stealing a few of those moves if I can pull them off.

Simon is capable of blistering stuff if called for, but is also aware that you can find examples of that pretty much anywhere these days - it's a different landscape compared to 30 years ago. The chops display thing was actually quite a topic amongst artists appearing at the show, & I know Dennis Chambers was discussing this widely around the event. In tribute to Dennis, three of us "performed" 5 minutes of unembellished money beat as the audience exited his clinic :)

Absolutely - also, Simon has little to prove in the technical ability department. He's spoken frequently about his focus on musicality.

Yes Art, along with other forum members, & a great evening hang with Simon too - an especially pleasing start to Larry's visit for sure :)

I got bored of the drum solo as I usually do, but I love that little open snare he has to the right of the main one... I might look into that.

What size ya'll reckon that is?
