Side snares ?

Greetings all !

New guy here and I’ll confess I’m not even a drummer. I joined the forum as the wife decided to start playing drums last year and has become pretty good at it.
I’m just here to ask questions that might help her with equipment selection and maybe learn something myself as I play guitar in a band.
So with all that ……. When it comes to side snares, what is the approach, what are you trying to achieve, snare recommendations?

I'm a guitar player here too ( joined a few months ago), that has always loved 'drum stuff' ( the players, gear...).

Thanks to being around some very good drummers in our bands (they are vintage drum nuts...) came here, to learn a bit

I guarantee you will get good advice here- just not from me!

( I'm hitting a practice pad in an apartment- learning Rudiments)

It's another option for a different sound. I like using it because I don't have to cross stick when playing the hat.

So to add some context….. I just bought her a 14x6.5 Tama Starclassic Performer as her original snare sounded pretty poor (cheap)
As she’s watching Drumeo videos and talking to everyone she can, she discovered the entire “side snare” concept and talk of “popcorn” snares or such.

Exactly. A side snare is an option for a different sound. Some go for popcorn, but me, I go for doosh. I use mine as a mushy low tuned snare. It’s certainly not necessary for what I do but it’s fun.

My main snare is a maple shell 6.5x14 tuned in the medium range. This makes it a great all-purpose drum for most rock songs. My side snare is a 3x13 maple piccolo tuned very high. With the snares on, it gives me that high pitch crack common to many songs back in the 90s. I can also release the snares for more of a timbale sound.

"I got the best bang for the buck one they don't make anymore"

I see a Side snare as if I want to 'fake' a hip hop sound sampled beat (what ever that means- well you know what it means)
in a bridge or some section of a old tune to give a hip hop flavor

5 X 12 Stage Custom Yamaha
blonde (was) $99 new

top left with the sticks keys and towel on it doesn't get much use
but can sound exactly Like I imagine

I like depth and smaller diameter 5 x 12 in a side snare
it's my perfect I've owned 3/13 too shallow etc played 5x10 too narrow
5x12 is exquisite

discontinued 5 x12 find one used

Side snare? How often do you hear anyone using a side snare. How many of you guys and gals use a side snare. How many songs do you hear a side snare being used? @TWP how many songs do you use your talkbox on?
I hear it all the time. "I was out shopping for a new vehicle to haul my gear. I need something big cause I need room for my side snare." "I downsized to a bop kit because of stage sizes, but I refuse to give up my side snare."
99.99% of the time unnecessary. prop. gimmick. meme.

wow wanna start a civil war?.
Harvey Mason, Idris Muhammad for the hi pitched ones

David Bowie Blackstar for the low ones..

I stopped using a side snare on the regular about 10 years ago. I have a timbale that takes that spot normally. For gigs that demand another snare sound I grab another snare drum and tune it to that sound for that gig, but those are rare occasions. Like last holiday season, where I finally broke a long-standing vow and played "Little Drummer Boy". I took my stock Tama Superstar Classis snare and tuned it low and buzzy like a field drum, with a BFSD Super Donut on it. Perfect.

I do not use side effects snares myself. As for recommendations, these are the ones that I know about. You can find sound samples of each of these on YouTube. Hope this helps.

2) https://pearldrum.com/products/snares/effects-snares

I could a maybe should a picked that one as the mount is compatible whereas the Yamaha Stage Custom (also 5x12) has a Yamaha compatible mount; but that's ok.
Hard to think of another- single piece- that (can) transform your whole set's sound like a side popcorn snare does-
but if you have to carry it and it's stand to one-nighters- it likely get's left- at home (ha)

Don't normally use a side snare but will be for some upcoming gigs.

10" Yamaha Stage Custom cranked into Steve Jordan range,
or Joe Montineri 12" x 4" Maple.

I did not expect Gretsch to be a top seller in side snares, but according to the Guitar Center web site it is. The price is also right.

It's the only one still available at that size- Yama dropped theirs
unless you go to exotics
It's a size you could almost (if compatible) mount as a "tom" on your bass..
and flick the snares on/off as needed 😁

Maybe Porkpie has a 5 x 12
check @striker

Yes you are right. They have that 5x12 snare that they call the Little Squealer.
This one is also listed as a top seller on Guitar Center's web site and it has a higher price tag.

I always wonder, how do you mix a side snare in a recording? It'll always sound off-centre in the overhead microphones.
