Shure 215 in-ears, am I missing something?

Yes. Hold the package they came in a comfortable distance in front of you. If, somewhere on the package it says "SE215", they are faulty and need to be replaced. 🤪
Yep, wish I'd known that up front. I was fooled by that Shure name they cleverly put right at the top. :(

Funnily enough I've just grabbed a pair of 215s. Using them for gigs with the electric kit. Not a fan of floor wedges.

Getting used to them at the mo. Finding the foam tips work the best for the seal in my ears and keeping the bass. No problems with volume or clarity at all.

But you can't save your ears. Buy the most expensive IEMs you can afford that are properly fitted by an expert.
Too late for me, Chris. I've live in Tinnitus City for almost four decades. Not only did we lack in-ear monitors when I was gigging, sometimes the vocalist would be the only one with a monitor and the rest of us basically flew blind. If I had my own monitor, that was a rare cause for celebration. An in-ear monitor, even a crap one, would have been sheer luxury for me at the time. Tech gear has improved unbelievably in the past couple of decades.

for a gig Friday
how big of a gig/room/ (programmed remote/tracks?) why would you even need them
- are they just ultra sophisticated ear protection or are they wired and feeding into ears some part of the electrical output of the instrumentation
(I don't understand what exactly they are- Sophisticated ear plugs am I right? very cool if so

Yes, no hearing protection back in the 60's and 70's. AND, even though the guitar amps were loud back in the day; the loudest instrument was always the snare drum. And guess which band member was always closest to the snare drum.

I think it's a question of stage volume - no amps, no wedges. Although it's an acoustic house kit... not sure how they're handling that (shields perhaps?) It's my first time on this gig since the change in amps/wedges. Basically, if I want to hear and play to the music, I need to have ears/phones.

I don't have an issue doing that, I was just trying to make it workable with a band where the leader turns around and calls every song. My touring ears would have been a pain removing and inserting all night long, and I wanted to fit-in with the rest of the band and not use my phones, so I tried a low-budget alternative. The fact is, I already had cheap buds that sound as 'good' as the Shures. I have better things to spend that money on.

I still don't or maybe do understand...what they are) Are they basically non powered earplugs? Correct right?...
they're not in-ear monitors correct? Just stinkin' earplugs..
Think the wording "in-ears" is what made me think "powered"..

@Tamboreter @RVC define what they are to me in layman's terms thxs
or are they powered earplug's I'm so Jazz confused

🤣

They're in-ear monitors.

Joe, @timmdrum is correct. Earplugs/phones to get the band’s monitor sound instead of floor wedges. Usually plugged into a battery pack that either bluetooth connects via app or hard wire connects to the mixing board.

I think @bermuda wouldn’t be able to use his Weird Al in-ear monitors because they isolate outside noise TOO well, and in this non-touring venue/situation, he needs to be able to hear verbal cues and communicate with other band members in the moment. As I understand it, these were purchased to fulfill that role because they don’t isolate as much, but evidently they don’t sound very good or work properly.

I only use in-ears when I sub in at my duo partner’s church. They run the show off Ableton, so I need in-ears to make all that work. They all use and recommended a cheapo set off Amazon that sounds and performs incredibly well for me. Can’t think of the name off hand. They were $50 and I love them when I have to use them.

Obviously the band leader needs to develop a little charades-style dance move for every song and just do that to call the next song. No hearing needed!

To save my hearing Im definitely always wired these days myself.

Sometimes you can only get a mono line, and in that case my p9hw has a mix finction witch sends the feed out to both ears.

You can try the KZ 10 Pro too from ali express @bermuda

They get raving reviews, and cost less than 40 bucks (which does makes me wonder how much a shure actually costs).

Sure 215's are priced quite steeply for entry-level IEMs...

The new genereation of cheapo chinese buds do just about the same job for a fraction of the price IMO. The Truthear Hola (20-ish $) and Hexa (50-ish $) are two models I have bought for testing purposes and they have held their own okay. Not enough become my "main" pair of buds, mind you,, but enough to be used as spares.

IMO most major IEM companies have been sleeping on their entry-and-mid-level lines for a while and are not up to snuff on the new advances in materials and drivers.

Here’s a cool video I found comparing different budget universal fit IEMs. I personally liked the the TFZ T2s. I’m thinking of buying a pair.

I've been researching IEMs for weeks now trying to find a perfect one, but it seems there are too many kinds of ears and opinions. I've seen a few memory foam tips (Comply, Dekoni) that people like using with these (Shure or KZ) for more comfort and better sound (by better fit), a good tip could probably improve bass and volume. Good to know you can't return them to GC. Amazon lists most as eligible though and many reviews state people sent them back. I just hope the one I'll buy won't be one of those, ha-ha.

Everyone will be wearing ears.

I will be trying them anyway - headphones in tow just in case - and report back tomorrow.
