Mapex meridian birch BD, RT
Pearl MLX FT
Beverly 21 snare
I have since swapped the rack tom with a black Gretsch Renown II and rarely use that snare. No problems with the tone but I am hankering for a matching kit for the look
That is a nice kit there's just something real nice about Frankenstein kits real unique.View attachment 137031
It's two Keller mahogany poplar re-ring toms 8"×12" and 16"×16", a poplar and/or basswood Peavey 14"×22" and a Ludwig Black Magic brass 5"×14. The stands dont really match either. Sometimes I think about stripping the bass drum, grain filling and painting them to match. Maybe red auto primer with wax finish? But the wrap on the bass drum has mojo for me
The snare is a PDP, the smaller tom is a Mapex, the larger tom is a WFL, and the bass drum is a Pearl export. That kit was fun to play. Peace and goodwill.Every drum in this set was from a different drum company. I painted them to match. Peace and good will.View attachment 137015

Have a look at mine port hole its a disaster.Who cut the hole in the bass head? Jack The Ripper?
I want to add an 18" floor tom to my kit as well but (as you pointed out $300+ is a bit too dear. My biggest hang-up is that I don't think I can mentally handle a jelly bean, so it's got to be in the red "family". This severely limits my experimentation.Speaking of mismatched drums: I've always wanted an 8x7" tom or 18x16" floor tom, but official add-on toms for my Renowns cost a small fortune.
So I thought, maybe instead I could buy a random mismatched 8x7" tom, or 18x16" floor tom, just to try out those sizes and see if I like them.
Maybe that's a way to scratch that itch without spending $340 or $800 on a single drum.
Has anyone else thought of doing something like this?
