I'm a sucker for black drums and thought this might be a good way to see the different black finishes both vintage and today's. I have a black kit that I'll post later after I see some more participation. In the interim here's a Mapex Black Panther snare in Transparent Black ( maple/walnut, 5.5x14 ) that I picked up a couple years ago.

Black Pearl, Black sparkle, Satin Black, Transparent Black, Onyx, Midnight Black....whatcha got? Black snares are welcome too. Black haters aren't LOL.

Circa 1980. Yamaha 9000 Series black wrapped full concert tom kit. Three 60's Stewart shells on the far right.
Don't know which I miss most: those drums or that hairline.

My buddy, Jack, taking the photographs that day was deep into a serious lens flare phase of his career.

Yeah that's actually me. One of my students photoshopped the Frankenstein
effect a few years ago to promote a Halloween event without my knowledge.
I stumbled across it by accident and liked it so much it became my avatar.

My very first kit. A nid-60s Gretsch 6 ply that I took the WMP wrap off and spray painted satin black. I also changed the Gretsch rail mount to a Ludwig mount for the tom. Killed the resale value, but what the hell. I don't plan on selling it because it sounds great. I used it on a gig just today but with a Rogers Holiday snare instead of the Yamaha Stage Custom snare shown in this picture.

You killed me 7 times over, what with each ply disgraced and the wrap removed, but if you like it, and it does look good, who am I to judge?

I only like black as it is solid black or very close to that.

And only my snares. Actually I need all my snares to be SOB.

Here is my companion for over 17 years:

Its an upgraded 10x5 SOlid Black wrapped Stage Custom Advantge snare. I added the luxury P
The fun thing is my custom Brady and Lignum Drums snare AND my Yamaha 25th anniversary snare are not 😂 (but I hope to change that back soon)

The other pictures are form my older kits/snares I had in the past, like the Musashi Black Oak Custom, Recording Custom RC/GA, RTC Galaxy Black snare and Manu Katché snare.

This was a $50 beater kit that ended up being my main recording kit---I replaced everything but the shells and the hoops---12 x 10, 13 x 11, 16 x 16, 22 x 14, 14 x 6.5---poplar shells in old school sizes---we call it thumper!
