Bet there has been a discussion on this before.....why do people say you should wear sox or drum in bare feet. I have tried it but find it is much better to wear a pair of soft trainers with no shock absorbtion and with flexible soles.

I have also recently bought a pair of work shoes(not boots) with steel toe caps and spend 10 minutes at the end of each practice simple hitting the drum as long and hard as i can with my heel down, concentrating on the foot not creeping up the peddle. I normally play heels up but someone once pointed out that you use the same ankle muscles in both techniques.

My logic was that if my toe is heavy my ankle muscles would have to work realy hard to move it. Realy burns my leg muscle but it does seem to be improving my speed the next day when i play in the normal shoes.
