Shell kit at the intermediate level quality

PDP Classic Maple are over budget

PDP Concept Maple are under the price of the YTC, but comes with cheap heads that will need to be replaced relatively soon. In other words, the difference in price will be offset by some margin.

In other words,is there a significative difference between YTC and the PDP Concept Maple? Both in sound, hardware and construction? As I understand, both are made in China.
PDP Concept Classic Maple are around $1,100. Right smack dab in middle of budget.

Is there such a thing as PDP Classic Maple? I'm Googling and can't find anything like that.

They ship out of USA usually the Carolina's. Find a kit on Reverb and send them a message asking if they ship to Canada.
Or contact them directly:

I am trending towards the Tour Custom with a 95% level of certainty. The price is right on the budget and the reviews are awsome. And you are right, the level of quality at the intermediate level is incredible.

Now, I have to choose the color for her since it will be a surprise. I want her to receive the drums in their boxes and build the kit herself. I remember doing the same exact thing back in the mid '80 with my 8 pieces Tama Superstar kit. It was such a thrill to put the kit together with my fellow musicians. We were all pretty excited.

I actually bought a yamaha TC snare in black a couple years ago. It’s nice. I use it on occasion (I have 5 snares that I mess around with). I would concur, the finish is not the greatest…it’s rather boring. If you look close at it you can see some grain, but black doesn’t show it very well. I think if I was buying an entire kit, I’d look at the other TC finishes that highlight the grain more. Maybe that chocolate satin.

But the reason they have such basic finishes is also the reason for their lowish price. They are more affordable so choices get more limited. Sound wise and playability they are good. The inverted hoops take a little getting use to, it seems like a smaller hitting area than other 14s the way those hoops bend in. I’ve swapped hoops experimenting on occasion.

PDP Concept Maple Classic begins around 1 500$ (canadian dollars) for a 3 piece kit.

PDP Concept Maple are effectively in my budget, but I have to think about changing the heads rather sooner than later.

I've never heard of PDPClassic maple.

Everyone wants to be Ludwig. :ROFLMAO:

PDP has the Concept series, including Concept Maple and Concept Maple Classic:

I thought the Butterscotch finish on my Tour set was nicely done, but I prefer the gloss cover coat that adds a little 'pop' on the Stage sets:

This is what my Tour Custom looks like up close. The finish has a really smooth sheen to it and it's applied perfectly.

Some would say that Satin finishes are "boring", but I think this finish (and the others in the TC line) are incredibly classy.

Thanks for the up close picture. The finish is awesome. She will be absolutely thrilled.

So what? Your going to change heads a lot in the life of the kit. Don't let $100 influence the decision on a kit you will have for many years. That's penny wise and pound foolish

I want her to have a 5 piece drum. So I will have to add the price of another tom + Tom holder

I honestly don't see the reason to pay around 1800$-1900$ compared to the price of the YTC for a pretty equivalent quality drum kit.

I wasnt speaking to that kit specifically but more generally. Don't let replacing stock heads be decision maker on which kit to get.

But the question remains. How does the PDP Concept Maple compared to the YTC in terms of maple quality, construction, hardware, hoops, lugs and, of course, sound?

YTC and PDP Concept Maple are about equal in shells and the wood quality. Finishes will be pretty much the same quality, edges will be of equal quality. But PDP has better hardware.

Maple sounds deeper. I hear birch records better but maple sounds more present in person. Unless she's gonna record, the maple is probably a better choice. Birch is a cleaner tone but it is missing lower frequencies.

Yamaha Tour Custom prices start at the top of your budget. And then go higher. Maybe beyond. PDP fits your budget well. You could score a new DW Design kit for same price as the Tour Customs. Or Tama Starclassic. Or Gretsch Renown. Better choices than the Yamaha. Honestly the YTC would be at bottom of my list compared to the other choices out there.

DW Design kit are way over budget

What is the difference in the hoops quality of PDP Concept Maple compared to YTC?

And, by the way, thank you in taking the time to give me all these informations.

Most of the DW kits for your needs are around $1,900 average in US dollars. Yup they are more expensive.

I was looking at PDP kits with wood hoops, so I didn't look at their metal hoops. Someone else can comment on hoop quality for what you need.
