Shell kit at the intermediate level quality

Hi, I am thinking of buying a new kit for my wife as a "graduation" gift since she is progressing very fast.

She is playing right now on a very old Rockstar that looks like it made the II world war.

I don't need the snare since she has a very good one already.

The kit will be pretty basic in terms of pieces. Something like a 22 bass drum, 10-12 toms and a 16 floor toms.

Budget between 1200$ and 1700$ in Canadian dollars.

Not interested in used kit. That's the beauty of getting old and having more money to spend :)

I begun to look on the Internet and the Yamaha Tour Custom caught my eyes.

Thanks in advance for all the advices.

I highly recommend the Gretsch Renown for a mid-range professional kit, however the price has gone up above 2k for most of the finishes. But it looks like you can still get the 10/12/16/22 Natural finish for around $1500 at this link, and also on Amazon currently.

My 2nd choice is definitely the Yamaha Tour Custom, they're fabulous drums for the money. They aren't quite on the level of the Renowns, but she'd still be very happy with them.

I own both the Renowns and Tour Customs, so I can answer any other questions.

LOL, I should have specified that my price range is in canadian dollars!

Yeah, Renowns would be great but she is not there yet :)

I read some very nice things on this Yamaha kit and I am glad to read a personal positive experience from an actual player.

Thanks for your feed-back.

Probably the Mars Birch and Mars Maple.
Armory next level up loses the center tom mount..

the Series are on left side column

Almost all of them make great intermediate kits. Ones I’ve played that I enjoyed are TCs, Ludwig Neusonics, and DW Design. If she really likes Tama, Superstars are pretty darn good.
Can vouch for the Superstar Classics. A great intermediate set at a really good price, that punches way above its weight; plus, you'd be keeping it in the Tama family!

Tama Superstar Classics are excellent kits. I owned one and it was great. PDP Concept Maple is a great kit as well. I own one now and I'm very happy with it. It has a pretty nice selection of wrapped and lacquer finishes, and add-on drums are available if you want to expand and add a 14" floor tom or 8" rack down the road.

I was a guest at a wedding a couple of years ago. They hired a killer pop/R&B/funk band and the drummer was playing those newer Yamaha Tour Customs in a chocolate brown finish. Sounded great at that gig. Pro level drums.

Are you sure she prefers maple over birch? Yamaha Stage Customs are also a good choice if she likes classic 80's records played on Yamaha Recording Customs.
A word of caution regarding the AQ2: they are almost unequivocally bashed in China, their home country. They are made in Mapex's OEM factory, and horror stories about inferior shells, problematic snare beds, etc. are abound. Although my experience with Force 3007 (their distant predecessor) wasn't exactly bad, these kits are definitely worth of caution.
