Ruffs and Drags

In response to Tommy Igoe. I recorded this video about the importance of the drum community keeping a distinction between ruffs and drags. Tommy makes this distinction in his video Great Hands for a Lifetime.

Hi Delta,

A quick question: when applied on a drumset in straight time, are drags usually played in time as 32nd grace notes?

You can certainly count a drag as part of the time if that makes it easier for you in the beginning. When I teach the drag, I teach it in time counting the grace notes as a last 16th note, or the 'a' of the previous beat. It is like a three stroke roll. But one should realize that they are not part of the counted time. And they are not figured in to the value of the notes of the measure. As such, they are not going to sound as marked in time, but freer.

@Scott thanks for the feedback.
