I saw the Soft Machine open for Jimi Hendrix. Marshall was an innovative drummer who never got his due.

Very sad news. He was a great musician and I have long been a fan. At least we have his magnificent legacy. I think it's a bit of a shame he was less well known than he deserved. RIP.

Longtime fan here. Always liked his mad energy and exuberance, and he was a fierce jammer.

You reminded me. OMG I am getting forgetful in old age. I saw John playing with EW! I remember his kit sound, and the whole band sound, was fantastic but I tuned out a bit during some of the bass solos
