I've just heard that one of the Brushes master, drummer Eddie Locke just past away at age 79. He was featured recently on Hudson Music DVD "The Art of playing with brushes" along with Joe Morello, Charli Persip, Billy Hart & Ben Riley.

Locke was associated with the Detroit jazz scene in the 1940s and 1950s, playing from 1948 to 1953 with drummer Oliver Jackson in a variety show called Bop & Locke. He moved to New York City in 1954, and worked there with Dick Wellstood, Tony Parenti, Red Allen, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Teddy Wilson, Roy Eldridge, and Coleman Hawkins. In the 1970s he played with Lee Konitz, Tiny Grimes, and Earle Warren in addition to remaining in Eldridge's band at Jimmy Ryan's through the end of the 1970s. Locke continued to perform often into the 1990s.
Eddie passed Monday morning September 7th 2009, in Ramsey NJ. He is survived by his children, and Mary-Ellen Healy, who loved him so dearly.

Rest In Peace Eddie, Hope your brushes playing legacy will continue to shine through the years.
