At summer NAMM, 1986, a guy was walking around with an inflatable drum, trying to generate interest (investments.) It was a vinyl or Naugahide "shell" fitted with actual edges and hoops. The drum wasn't exactly airtight, it was really more of a collapsible thing to save space. In use, the shell was kept expanded by metal struts that fit between the top and bottom hoops.
As expected, it sounded pretty dark and mushy, and was never heard from again.
