Practice vs talent

Buddy practiced every day of his life from age// 4 or so on to his final..

He just did it in front of an audience on stage

He played by ear like we all do
lol)
He said he'd never read music in a classical musician situation..
; )
a few of his teachers was like Charlie Parker Bix Beiderbecke (?!) Art Tattertots and similar cats
and every other musician he conjoined with
(!)
he had big ears.
(literally)
from birth

he heard what was around him

If I had to choose between the two (and I did, a long time ago) gimme talent.
I honestly believe I have the (some) talent but my horrific A.D.D. has been a gigantic 👹 monster on my back. Not trying to come off as woe is me but you need the whole package sometimes no?.

It depends on the person. People start at different places but those differences can easily even out over time.

I always get a little annoyed by people saying "you're so talented" to musicians. It's meant to be a compliment but in my mind it ignores the hundreds/thousands of practice hours they've probably logged to get there, regardless of what their natural ability was.

I have learned that there are gifts we are born with and everybody's is different. One such gift is the ability to do music, to play an instrument, to appreciate all the nuances needed to do music. When I hit the gym daily, I got to a point of being able to bench press my weight with dumbbells but could only curl about 30 maybe 35 pounds. My workout friend could curl 50 pounds, his arms were longer from the shoulder to the elbow and he said that is why. Not sure if that is the case, but he had an ability I did not. Just like I can lay down a groove and do some nice fills but I will never be (insert any professional name). They have their skills, I have mine. There might actually be things that I can do they can't. My point is, talent can be improved through practice but there are those that will never be able to play the drums.

Not much talent OR opportunity for practice here. Individual case study on how far I can go just on sheer luck.
Along with a general dissatisfaction with any other vocation😊

age 12
he heard this before hand
it was what was around on the stages his parents took him to
whether it was the jugglers the tap dancers the musicians the jokesters the skits
he interpreted what he heard
perfectly as a perfectionist natural born perfectionist
lol

"He was on Broadway as Baby Traps the Drum Wonder at age four, playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever" on a drum. He was a singer and tap dancer. In his teens he led a band and toured in the U.S. and Australia. At 15 he became the second highest paid child entertainer behind Jackie Coogan during the 1930s."

one plays thru absorption - listening- transferring of experiences
toss in a good bit of single-mindedness
and there's your brew

Yeah, ideally. My biggest problem is laziness. And my chops just suck since Covid. My solution (such as it is) is to play simple grooves but play them well.

I pressed reply because laziness is a personal demon of mine. I've searched YouTube to somehow break out of this trait. My laziness or (low motivation) is devastating. My mother was one that telling her she couldn't do something drove her..tell ME that and I believe you.

do you mean laziness towards the drums? Or every and anything..
Drums are one of the the lazy man's way to riches
Happens to a few

lol

I've been putting in the hard yards for flippin' years and I still feel poxy.

A year ago I listened to a band that was looking for a perm bass player. The drummer was better than I was at several things and as a complete drummer too.
Last night I saw the band a year later and I feel that the drummer is no longer better than I am. We're pretty equivalent and there are now things I'm better at, he is prob better at other drum things than me.

It was interesting to see how my perspective changed.

Any and everything. How I made it this far in life amazes me. It's as much or more lack of motivation than sheer laziness. I've actually considered hypnosis. Clock back and forth in front of my face..on the count of 3 you WILL relentlessly practice your rudiments. Me calling the hypnotist 3 weeks later..Frank..it didn't work..something went wrong. 😥. I'm reading every response here for motivation. 😃.
