Played a 50-year high school reunion last night over at the country club and my drums were period-correct - '72 Ludwig Standards with a mid-60s Pioneer snare. Plenty of dancing and drinking, fun night! I even threw a little disco ball light on the bass drum for kicks. (Get it? For kicks? Ha.) View attachment 150769 View attachment 150770
I had a standard kit in gold strata. I think it was stamped 69 in the bass drum. Anyway, I played it from about 72 till 1984. Sounds like a fun gig for you.
For the last several gigs, I’ve had a chance to get all my latest purchases out for a spin. Those purchases are a Tune Bot, a Kentville head for my snare drum, the snare drum itself, and a Behringer BA19A bass drum mic (on a SHU Flatz).
The Tune Bot is a very useful device. I invariably have to alter my tuning at gigs, but the Tune Bot helps me at least start with a solid baseline if I do need to adjust things. Happy with that investment.
The Kentville head is incredible. Feel is more important to me than even sound, and the Kentville feels great under stick. My favorite sonic qualities of the head are the brush response and the cross-stick. The Kentville is on my new True Sonic snare drum, which is a fine workhorse drum. Sounds just like an old Dynasonic or Pearl B4514 to my ears.
The biggest shocker/sleeper purchase for me is the Behringer bass drum mic. It does exactly what a Beta 91a or a Senn e901 does, but for whatever reason the Behringer simply does it better to my old, tired ears. Probably the best bang for buck purchase I can recall, costing a mere $59. An additional benefit of the Behringer/SHU system is I get to enjoy a full front head.
Pictures from last Friday in Oslo, Norway. My kit (Starclassic Performer Maple/Birch). Gig went great, about 200 people attending. Good in terms of us headlining not in our home town.
I played a great gig with my country rock band Saturday afternoon. My very first Wine Festival, in Chesapeake, VA. 4,000 tickets sold. I had no idea it was such a big deal til I got there. Wonderful roomy stage, though I wish they'd brought in a drum riser, but oh well.
I used my Sonor Vintage Series Three22 set with a 6.5x14 Rogers Powertone reissue. Killer drums, all!
