Playing drums and music- a low barrier to entry compared to other occupations?

Lowest common denominator, become a bass player!

now, i know you are joking....(brandishes his 72 P'Bass in one hand and 92 J-bass in the other)

but in all seriousness, I think singing is LCD because people think you don't really need to do anything to become a singer.

all the time, I hear "I am gonna be a singer...all you do is show up and yell...."

AND, how many more "vocalists got talent" shows do we need out there?

I want to get this low:

I teach both bass and drums. Of the two I reckon I could get a complete beginner to 'basic' competency level quicker on bass. The thing with bass, it's not really designed to be a virtuoso instrument so to overcome those limitations to Berthoud levels takes a lot dedication but to get started on it, I would say easier than the coordination issues associated with drums.

definitely easier to coordinate, but - coming from a bass player of 30+ years - there is something that has nothing to do with playing that most people can't get about playing bass, and that is it's connective role to the entire song. I have had many students go on to be great players, but very few have had the intuition to become great bassists.

I am a band director for a living, so I have taught ALL instruments, and believe that more than any other instrument, bass takes a special understanding of all of the elements of playing music to do well at.

The bass player from Mudvaine and the bass player from Papa Roach both are very present in the music because on both bands there is only one guitar player so the bass has to fill a lot of the melody.

Listen to how the bass carries a lot weight.

On this one the bass run makes it more interesting than if it was just guitar alone.

oh yeah...i love Ryan Martinie!!!

What the bass player from Papa Roach gets no love?? :(

I really don't like those guys....Mudvayne and Sevendust are the only bands I can take from that era/genre of music.

Papa Roach...Linkin Park...all too "meh" for me

I was even on the fence about Mudvayne, and then The End Of All Things To Come came out, and I was in, no question

If only for the bass playing part the Infest album has a lot of great bass parts. I used to despise Limp Bizkit but their drummer has a lot of good parts too. On the other hand a lot of people like Red Hot Chili Peppers and I just don't

yep....not a bass player, but a lot of people thought Zakk Wylde era Ozzy was the best, and I was just bored with that whole thing

I also get yelled at b/c I don't like Rage Against the Machine, System Of A Down, The Deftones...I was just way to into the underground punk and metal stuff by that point. All of that stuff was "too mainstream" for me...

Zakk Wylde?? No, absolutely not, the best era for Ozzy was also not Randy Rhodes either, the best era was Jake E. Lee (It would have been Randy but he was gone when the 80's peaked).

I really don't like RATM I can tolerate 2 songs, System of a down.. same, Deftones, It took me a minute (or more accurate I was deployed in Panama and I had to ride the bus all day for my watch so I took my Ipod and I had the Deftones Albums so I gave them a chance, I think out of all 4 albums that I had, I can only get about 10 songs that I liked enough to listen to them more. I knew about the Deftones from their inception, but I only gave them a chance about 10 years later. Same thing with Baby Metal and Behemoth.

I always thought Zakk can be a great guitar player but he just over uses pinch harmonics and his own music (Black Label Society) is just awful.

I agree about Jake E Lee...Randy era is still my fav b/c those were the "Salad Day's" albums/era, but BATM and Ultimate Sin had some great writing and playing

oh man...I was getting into Behemoth when all of that Nu-Metal stuff was raging, back when Behemoth was considered extreme...and can not stand baby metal. To me, it is a joke that I don't want to be a part of

yeah...he is just another "blues guitar" guy...and that wears out on me very quickly. Same reason why I could not get into BLS...very "run of the mill"

The first time I saw Baby Metal was when they came out some 12 years ago, back then I also thought "What kind of joke is this, how dare someone make fun of my religion!" (metal being my religion) "What do you mean you people?" So I never gave them a chance, 10 years later I was deployed in Dubai and locked in my hotel room because of Covid restrictions and got to see the birth of YouTube reaction channels, which at the time it was entertaining to watch because it was like reliving the first time you heard a band and some of them were quite good at describing all the things they were discovering on their supposed first listen. One of those reaction channels reacted to Baby Metal... the video was a live in concert performance where they had a statue in the background (reminiscent of the And Justice For All Tour). The bass drum was also very much the basss drum from One, they were chanting what sounded to me like Death, Death, (they were saying Des which means something else in Japanese), the girl singing gets crucified, and the other girls place a neck brace on her... The music is metal as F*&K so I was intrigued, I had to know more.

I found out that:
1 Well, I knew this Japanese are NOT catholic so they don't pray to the same god so the virgin thing(the big ass statue) and her getting crucified is not offensive to them.
2 The neck brace is in honor of the drummer from the band X-Japan who injured his neck (permanently) by headbanging too hard so now he has to wear a neck brace. This also lead to them writing the song Headbanger or how they say it Hendoba... because Japanese how a hard time pronouncing the letter R too.
3 When the girls introduce themselves during the song they cross their arms in an x, also to shout out to X-Japan.
4 The band both Japanese and American versions of are all phenomenal musicians, they have to be able to play all those metal genres flawlessly and the smart thing that their management has done is to request famous bands to "collaborate" with Baby Metal so basically write them a song and the girls sing it and dance to it. (The band then must be able to play at that level for example Polyphia and Dragon Force both have "collaborated" with them).

Yes it is a gimmick but it works well. it is still metal (or at least those first 2 albums were metal, the new one is more pop with a splash of 9 string guitar) ESP (Japanese guitar maker ) made a 9 string ESP Baby Metal Edition guitar:
