perfect pitch. what about perfect timing?

Perfect timing is relative, unlike perfect pitch.

Donald Fagen is well known for being tremendously picky about his drummers and timing..

He is picky also about perfect pitch. He had every keyboard he every bought re-tuned.

Perfect timing is about as sterile and lifeless as a styrofoam cup.

Not by my definition. But I understand what you mean.

Could you only imaging what Zeppelin would sound like if Bonzo was locked into a click constantly. Furthermore think about some of the moments that were had in the world of jazz fusion or trad jazz. There are a few Ellington and Basie tunes where the tempos change drastically, but it's all relative to the mood of the music.

I've heard that african drummers can hold a tempo to something like one-200th of a second over 20 mins - but then that's in a group, supporting each other - - -
