Opinions-About to order new drum set

Well that's good. I was always a 12/13 guy until I got these 10/12 References. But in the end, I'll end up with a single 9x13 on the Reference, creating a 13/16/22 kit as usual. And right now, I'm working on a schlepp-able Bonham kit that will have 10x14/16x18/14x26 drums of various makes that takes up no more room than my 13/16/22 would. So in the end, I've left even the 12" behind ;)

With the latest blues band I'm in this Friday will be the first time I use 13/16/22. I was using 12/16/22 but decided to change my mind. I love the 13. So This gig's for you Bo.
 
Seems like a whole lotta drums to be carrying around-I'd simplify to a 12/16. I bet if you gig that monster the 8 in will get left home, then soon after you'll be eyeing the 10in. The more toms the more likely you'll get some MFing sympathetic snare buzz-something I discovered yesterday adding my 10 in tom back to my 13/16 (had none/zip buzz which took me a solid week of finicking to get right) and now buzzzzzzzzzzz. I will conquer snare buzz and when I do I'll post it on here-famous last words :poop: . Oh yeah and good luck with the kit. Whatever your choice you'll love it then some time from now leave it-tends to be the run of things. So for now enjoy your new kit.

Sounds like the drum version of an 18" crash-ride.
 
I think a 14 works fine if you're only playing 1-up, and you can tune it higher like Bonham and place it off to the left side of the bass drum. I just had my 14" tom on the kit in the 1-up, 2-down set up and while I liked the sound I just kept thinking "man, that tom is huge!" the whole time and ended up back with the 10" and 13" again.
 
You should try a 15" rack tom. When I tried that, I tuned it down low to where it resonated with the 26" bass drum and it was just a huge sound - I loved it.

Paired with a 18” or a 16” + 18” ?

After playing some different drums and comparing in person, reading some of the feedback on here, and thinking about it non stop (ha), I made my decision and pulled the trigger.

I don't think those will disappoint. Those Tour Customs are great sounding kits. Congrats.
 
I hope you will enjoy your new Tour Customs! Yamaha makes great drums (and most everything) and that size combo is a good spread for a 5-piece config or just drop the 10" and go with the 4-piece. Congrats!

22 10 12 13 16 is a great combo, and it allows to easily build a jungle kit 16 10 13 ;-).

Once you put the 14” floor tom and push the 16” away, the 14” becomes your main floor tom. You’ll find that your left hand won’t touch the 16” as much and well as it used to.
