New drum shortage worldwide???

As above its a number of factors but mostly shipping prices due to a severe lack of containers and ships out of position
($2500 two years ago is $17,500 as of yesterday) So a lot of companies are holding off on shipments until prices come down, which may not be until the New Year.

If that's the case, then welcome to hyper inflation... Sigh. That's bad for everyone and everything.

Aren’t you the guy with his kit aboard the Ever Given? Wasn’t that you?

Haha. Very funny. On a side note, this ship arrived at its destination (Rotterdam) 7/29/2021. Four months late. This was a major logistics disruption.
LOL, yep....

If you've ordered exactly what you want, and alternatives aren't acceptable, then maybe just wait it out.

Use your Exports while you wait. You've had them 27 years - what's one more.

Maybe try to contact Tama directly about it somehow.
Tried and true Exports.... I hate and love them. No use contacting anyone frankly. I think that would be a dead end. I think I will just wait it out. Not like I need this kit to record for deadline or anything. Just trying to sooth the mid-life crisis crap in my head!!

I'm also currently waiting on a Tama kit to ship, but I haven't waited nearly as long as you have.

I ordered the Tama Starclassic W/B 4 piece kit from Sweetwater a month ago and I'm still waiting on it to be shipped. My rep told me he's hoping to get it to me this month, but that's not set in stone. I check my email like crazy every day waiting for that shipped email. I did notice some of them in different finishes were in stock a few days ago and sold out quickly, so hopefully it won't be much longer or I'll cancel and pick something from another company (probably Pearl Masters or something). Sweetwater is wiped out of pretty much everything Tama except for Imperialstar kits, so they definitely seem to be struggling at the moment.

Not only are there shortages, but I noticed that some companies like Pearl have jacked the prices up on their kits by a few hundred dollars each.
Yeah, I am hearing and seeing the same here in this forum. It is either wait and get the set you specifically wanted, or try and scrounge around and figure out how to piece-meal a kit. Makes sense to wait as I have a contracted price and basically everyone is in same boat.

Hey everyone - thanks for your input. My decision is to wait it out. I am not going to find any Tama's like that in Canada, and do not feel like hunting for parts of it all over. Not worth it to me. With prices going up for everything too, trying to order a new kit may be more cash then is really warranted. If I don't get the kit in February, I will cancel and just keep my soon to be 28 year old Exports and lump it.

Any way, I appreciated your time and please all stay safe and stay drumming.

I'm always saying that nothing is more expensive than regret so it's probably for the best. Maybe the kit will come through sooner as a reward for your patience. At any rate, post a review when you get them set up!

Nothing new.
I remember ordering Tama octabans back in the 80's and had to cancel after 6 months of waiting.

I ordered a Tama Club Jam Suitcase back in early February after I saw them in a video from NAMM. I just got them last week. Since they don't come with a snare, I ordered a Superstar Classic Snare in the same finish (Indigo Sparkle) at the same time (Early February). I am still waiting on that to arrive and the dealer cannot get an ETA. I purchased it from the music store I teach at, and today there was a frustrated customer who had been waiting over 7 months for a Gretsch guitar that they ordered. It's happening with A LOT of different industries, and the musical instrument industry is no exception.

Hi all. I thought I'd provide an update. Well, 16 months AFTER I purchased the Star Classic Performer, I got - some - of the kit. I got the standard 6 piece which was probably in some NY warehouse somewhere, who the hell knows. But I am STILL waiting for an 8", a 18" floor tom, and three tom arms because I have rack and need this for the toms to mount. Essentially, I have a brand new set and and will probably never see the rest of it, well, my guess is as good as yours. I have NOT even bothered playing them. They are brand new, sitting in my basement, waiting. I just don't want to put what I have together until I got the whole bloody kit.

This is about to sound pathetic, really sad, but here goes and some of you will just call me an idiot, but whatever - I need to vent: I have been playing a Pearl Export from the 90's. This StarClassic Performer - not even a top of line from Tama, just more Chinese product - was going to be my last and newest kit I would ever dream of owning. I don't tour. I don't record. I am probably terrible at drumming compared to some you here on this forum. But I love drums. You have to to be to have stuck with it for so long and for no reward but to know you can carry a beat to your favorite song. But this experience, along with all the utter crap this world is dealing with, has now left me cold. I don't love the drums anymore. I made the mistake of thinking a new kit would inspire me, sound great and just be a reward for years of donating lonely, many lonely, hours to practice to it. Breaks my heart. I was a fool.

I was looking forward to finally owning a new Tama kit. Now, I couldn't give a rat's ass. My advice to any suckers like me wanting to splurge on a Tama kit - don't. Unless you have 2 years to wait.

Well that's all. Thanks for your time and listening.

Hi. Very sorry about your frustrations, but it saddens me that you're rejecting drumming when the problems you're describing lie with corporations and governments. Drumming rises above them, and in fact existed long before they did.

If drumming is no longer rewarding for you, that's understandable, but I don't think that's something a new kit can fix anyway. I practice primarily because it makes me feel good, physically and mentally, and I get that feeling whether I'm playing on and expensive kit or on practice pads.

Also, there's nothing wrong with taking a break. Try putting your creativity into other projects for a while and see how that goes. You might revisit and rediscover the drums again after some time away.

Good luck.

Cancel and find the set elsewhere. or buy something else you like. It's really not that hard a decision.

Dave, no man. Don’t give up. Don’t ever let these bastards get you down.

Just take a few days. Try to come back to it with a new mind set.

Congratulations on your new kit.

@davige101 I can feel your pain and would be pissed off as well.
But...apparently you did receive the 10-12-14-16 and 22 Starclassic drums - some people will never be able to own a set like that.

Of course you should have received the 8 and 18 toms as well.
But that doesn't make this set unplayable - some people play all their life with just 1 rack and floortom.
Go get some tom arms and enjoy (most of the) drums you've been waiting for a long time.

Alright Dave, suck it up buttercup.

I know it sucks, but your part of the way there. Set them where you can play them, or see them, or stack them in a corner where you can see them and focus on some aspect of your playing. Your drums will be here sooner or later. Keep your eyes on the prize.

I ordered a kit in Nov 21 from Pearl with an add on floor tom. They said December for the kit and February for the tom. The kit came in March. The tom... who knows. They say this month, but I've heard that story before.

To add insult to injury, the kit arrived with a broken bass drum hoop. Pearl says NINE MONTHS to get a replacement.

In the end, relax. Some things are beyond our control. You've chosen to participate in the game, let it happen. And post pics of that kit when you get it set up.

Hello all. Let me preface this with the acute knowledge we are in a pandemic and there are bigger priorities in life at the moment. So please no yelling... I am just venting a bit, and asking a question or two to get your thoughts.

I am wondering if any one else is having issues with getting a new drum kit, particularly with Tama?

I was told by my drum shop in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that it would be a 3 to 5 months wait when I ordered the kit. Today, I was just told that it won't be until February 2022 until I see this new kit (StarClassic Performer M/B). That makes it 1 full calendar year for essentially a mid-level set!!! He said it was due to the pandemic, of course, and Tama is very back logged but promised they would eventually get the allocated stock out. Eventually. This of course implies that the new kit may not even show up next February either. No one really knows.

Some background on me. This will be my first new kit in 27 years. Yep, 27 years... I currently use a Pearl Export kit that is - you guessed it - 27 years old. I play for myself and, on rare occasions, in a live situation. I am more or less just a hobby player with intermediate to pro skill level, I guess. This new Tama would have been the last kit I would ever be able to afford as I have a family and bills, etc. This is my hobby, practically my one and only, and was just beginning to get into recording. So this kit was going to be special for me. To get the Star series is just ludicrously $$$$ and I always wanted a legendary Tama, so when this came up from from Tama, I bought into it.

What annoys me is Tama put this new kit out there for 2021 knowing full well there is a pandemic, which means it would have massive shortages and backlogs to complete drum allocations (I assume Canada is not a big player here, so we get the bum's rush all of the time it seems, I dunno.) I understand the 3 to 5 month turnaround for a kit to come from China (the Starclassics are from China, the Star series is Japan is my understanding), but not over 1 year. Not for a mid level kit. They did not manage expectations in my view; Do not release a new product if you cannot produce it in a timely manner. I am not blaming my drum shop (although I really do not know for sure if they knew this or not back in Februray; I am allowing benefit of doubt here), but I cannot say that this experience has been great at all.

I guess this is my fault in end; should have never bought a kit in a pandemic.

So I have the option to cancel the order and get my down payment back, or just wait it out because - as my rep keeps saying (to not lose a sale) - that the Tama kit will be worth the wait and that, worldwide, drums, guitars and keyboards are all in demand and short supply.

Is that true? Are you waiting for a Tama kit? Or ANY kit from ANY maker?

Is it just because I am in Canada and Tama doesn't give a crap?

Should I give up on this kit and use my money elsewhere?

I'd like your thoughts on this. 1st world problem, which is really not a problem - I know. But I just feel I need to ask and to vent, for better or worse, and have basically lost any of the that excitement I had for this. Not sure what to do.

Thanks all. Thanks for your time to read through all this. Be safe and take care.

Davige101
My thoughts are this... If you've had your heart set on this specific kit then you have 3 options...

1. wait it out!

2. call other music stores to see if they can get it in sooner... (and if you call Guitar Center and they have it don't forget to ask them for 15% off because they will give it to you that might be worth it right there).

3. lastly you might want to pick a whole different kit.

What I have noticed is a lot of companies are now using the excuse of the pandemic... who knows if it's true or not.

I hear you, I feel for you, wishing you luck and hope it all works out for you in the end.

"And The Beat Goes On"

Cheers!
