Music that moves you to tears

I've been kind of emo my whole life about music and depending on the situation and my mood, anything could trigger an emotional response. I think the first time I heard Mozart's "Elvira Madigan" theme with those lush supporting chords underneath the sparse piano was one. Bach's "Aria" was another. Don McLeans' "Vincent" (and even "American Pie"), and Cat Stevens' "Father and Son"...but there have been countless others associated with a certain time in my life (I remember what I was listening to back when I was three for some reason - mom and dad had a huge record collection we had access to).

Cats in the Cradle, Father & Son are both "button pushers" for me as well.

"My Beloved Wife" from Natalie Merchant on Tiger Lily is another one........I had to play that tune before at a memorial and I barely made it through without a tear........the good news is the drum part can build and add significant exclamation points as the song peaks.

More recently Chris Stapleton's "Maggie's Song" should pull the strings for any dog lover........which I am......

Well?..i still remember as a kid getting a lump in my throat when king Kong was getting shot from the top of the building. I don't remember the music. I might Google it. I couldn't talk for 10 minutes or I'd have broken down.

Most music that has an emotional effect on me is from film scores, and is also mostly John Williams stuff. "Twin Suns" in Star Wars, "Hedwig's Theme" from Harry Potter. But one surprising piece of music came from Metallica. The latest version of "The Memory Remains" off of S&M2. At the end when the crowd just takes over singing, to the point where the bands ends, and then even the orchestra ends, and the crowd just keeps singing on and on... yeah, I teared up. It was just so powerful. And if you're familiar with the version in S&M1 the same thing happens, except the orchestra continues to play and leads right into the next song. It seems that this was also the plan for S&M2, but the audience said "NO, we aren't done yet." Unbelievable!

Not sure if this song has been mentioned or not but if you couple a depressing time in your life and Zac Brown's "bittersweet" that'll make you shed a tear or two or at the bare minimum choke ya up.

Actually come to think of it Billy Joel's "lullabye" has choked me up a few times, not that its depressing or anything but If you have a daughter you know why.

Alright now back to some metal!!! lol

I think I’ve just tasted salt water a few times seeing live music and I think they were all from unaccompanied bass solos. Not sure why
