Minnesota Drummer in Recovery - Coming up on 1 year - Looking for some help

Hey everyone, Happy Holidays, I hope you are doing well, staying healthy, and able to support yourselves during this pandemic.

My name is Sam and it has been some time since I've been on this incredible forum mashed with wisdom, skill, and experience for all things drums.

A quick background (I'll try to keep it short):

I'm from the Minnesota Twin Cities and have been playing drums since the 5th grade. Over the last 7 years, I had been playing with an up-and-coming bluegrass/country band with incredible players, but more so, and incredible family of support, Love those guys (I do want to clarify though, that funk, soul, and all things New Orleans is where my drummer heart is).

Now to the point - In the midst of our early success, we had just released our first album at 1st Ave, I got caught up in something I could have never predicted. In the same week, I played a (as in 1) pulltab and won $1000 and played a scratch off and won $5000 (I literally could count on my two hands up until this point in my life the amount of times I had actually gambled). Needless to say, after that happened, I immediately got addicted, so much so that within 1 year, I had lost my savings, got let go from my group, was pawning my drum kits, and more importantly almost lost my marriage.

SO... with the incredible support of my wife, my band members, and family, I did the whole 9, got into in patient treatment, did the groups, struggled through relapses and now thank the lord, I am here today, alive, not in jail, and working a job.

I'm reaching out right now because I am coming up to my 1 year milestone abstaining from gambling. This anniversary is huge for 2 reasons. It's the goal that my wife and I set to when we can start seriously start trying to have children, and when I can get back on the skins again and purchase a drum kit.

Long story short, I'm looking for any love from anyone in Minnesota and am trying to pick up a beater kit for cheap. I know I acquired too much gear when I was gigging hard so I thought I'd put this out there. If any of ya'll need more space in your home studio, or need to purge, or whatever, if you are looking for a home for your old dogs where they will be loved and played everyday, please hit me up.

Damn, straight up, this is the first real public thing I've put out there cause it's taboo. And on that note, gambling addiction is real, and if you feel like you, or someone you know may be starting to get out of hand, hit me up, don't let it take over your life. Reply on this thread or shoot me an email at kurachst@gmail.com and we can chat.

Much love,

Garibaldi is king

"I tried to join Gambler's Anonymous. They told me I had three-to-one odds I would recover." - Rodney Dangerfield. Seriously, your efforts in recovery are laudable. Heroic. I have a friend whose a prominent Twin Cities area saxophonist who suffered that addicition. She's been recovered now for over a decade. I wish I still had the old set of Brand-X drums my stepson left here. But I eventually gave them away. I'll put a posting on my fb page to find out if anyone would like to throw you a lifeline. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the words Andy, Jazzerooty, and Tomano. It’s much appreciated. I’ll say it’s a trip, my life used to be wife, drums, dogs, and work straight up. Pretty much this past year recovery and family took up the space of my drums... but NOW even just writing this post and chatting with my old band mates, I can’t tell you how excited I am just thinking about playing again. I got my sticks and a pad for rudiments going and it’s getting me jacked, smiling wide!
Take care ya’ll, I wish you a happy and healthy new year!

Man, I feel you on the one big gambling win starting an addiction.

While I stopped myself before I made it problem, 18 months ago I went to the casino for the first time since it arrived in my city with 50 dollars to play slots, and I won 2500 bucks on the 2nd lever pull. They almost had me, I ended up going for nearly 2 months straight. And while I over all came out ahead, I could walk in and blow 200 bucks in less then 5 min.

One day after a 250 dollar loss, I just decided I’m done. I wasn’t even chasing the money. It was just the thrill of the game with real stakes. I’d win 700 bucks buy out never really made me happy, it just mean I had more free money to put in the machine. It’s an awful habit that my grandpa suffered from. Just glad I was able to decide to make drum gear my addiction instead

I live in south metro and recently wanted to unload a crash cymbal and piccolo snare.

Do you happen to be in the Minnesota Blues Jam Facebook page? I joined and looked into showing up at a jam but COVID hit...

Keep it up with the drum gear!

Thanks for the kind words my friend, I’m actually going to check out a kit tonight! My buddy runs a studio and was asking around town and found me a house kit from from a bar that had to shut down unfortunately. Hopefully she sounds good and keeps in tune, and I’ll give her a good home.

Peace

I didn’t know that Facebook page existed so I’ll check it out. I guarantee I’ve gotten to play with some of those cats at the open nights at the northeast Palace off Lowry.

I’m on my way to go check out a kit right now!

I’m actually very interested in the piccolo snare though ;) that’s crazy, this is going to sound cliche, but I was a hockey player growing up and got some big thighs and found that with how I like to play, piccolos gave me more freedom behind the kit. I used to have the pearl 3.5” depth by 13” diam and it was my baby. Is it still available? What’s the specs?

I live in the west metro but my office just moved to Eagan so I’m around them parts.

I've been there with addictions. You're strong & committed for staying the course and I applaud you for it.
Good luck on the kit & let us know what you find.
