Malagueña! cover-- Stan Kenton pro Chart

Class A Drummer

Pioneer Member
My High school Jazz band performing "Malagueña!" by Stan Kenton.

This is by far my favorite song to perform out of all ones our jazz band learned. We were somewhat out of practice on this song, so there are alot of mistakes, but i still think it sounded good.

Besides a little bit of speeding up and a few slightly early hits, i think i did ok. Tell me what you think.

The trombone player is fired. What ride cymbal are you using??

Its a high school band not pro lol. But yeah if you watch later on in the video my conductor explains his 'mishap.' Actually, he is one of the top trombone players in the state, if not the best.

The ride cymbal is just a 20" K. Thats all it says on it.

Ahhh, the days of high school big band... Trumpets are working so hard but still not hitting anything, trombone solo drops the ball (ouch!, what state do you live in, the best huh? sorry just giving you a hard time ;), nothing happenin soloist wise. Ok, Im hearing some stuff right off the bat. First, you are hammering the toms, its distracting to be honest, try and draw the sound out, get a noticeably and big sound, not a bashing tone. So now were swinging, too often I hear people that care so much about huge set-ups that they lose sight of the musicality and subtlety. Cool down a bit and think about making those hits sound effortless, same thing I said about the toms, try and get a big sound by drawing it out of the drums, not slamming and hammering. Give me some dynamics in those set-ups too! It would be a world of difference. For the solo sections, variety, what youre doing gets incredibly static, and you dont mark where the solos are changing soloists, I wanna hear you switch it up, build some intensity and push the soloists! Not bad though Class A, I remember the days of steve gadd groove, hahaha. Keep it up man.

I live in maryland. The trombone player really is excellent, but nothing compared to what we had last year. We had an incredibly strong trombone section, the lead went on to major in music at Eastman.

But thats interesting criticism about the toms and stuff. When it comes to the solos, i just kinda like to let the soloist shine. Im a little better at accompanying a soloist when its a jazz swing.

Believe me, they cant go anywhere if you arent goin with them or helping them get there.

I guess you are right. I have heard from many people to 'just keep time.' At my schools festival, we had a sightreading peice (which you can watch here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh3HLqlK1yE ) and the proctor said that i did fine and that i had a great swing feel, but he said instead of hitting the kicks, to just keep time, especially during solo sections.

I guess its a matter of opinion, and i actually agree with you on this one britt.

I have seen a couple of your vids now and have to say that you seem to have the swing feel but the band seems to have this almost "if it's a quarter note then its a quarter note", kind of feel. I'm sure when I was in school the music had denotation on it like "with feeling" or "lively" written so that we could make it sound better. We have a program on Public TV here called Student Measures that highlights the music students in the county and last night I happen to see the jazz band, and they could have used you since the drummer was the only one who couldn't swing. He was bad. They lost a great drummer through graduation last year and he is missed.
