I know someone with this 13x9 tom for a great deal its 3 ply its Maple/poplar/Maple your thoughts on this drum i would add it to my current kit as a nother orphan which I like i already have 2 orphans on my kit and love it.
Probably mahogany/poplar/maple ..... not maple/poplar/maple. Most all these shells that were wrapped have mahogany outer plies. Only the lacquered wood finishes (natural maple/thermogloss & walnut stain) were maple/poplar/maple.I know someone with this 13x9 tom for a great deal its 3 ply its Maple/poplar/Maple your thoughts on this drum i would add it to my current kit as a nother orphan which I like i already have 2 orphans on my kit and love it.
Here's a pic of the interior definatly looks like Maple/poplar/Maple.Probably mahogany/poplar/maple ..... not maple/poplar/maple. Most all these shells that were wrapped have mahogany outer plies. Only the lacquered wood finishes (natural maple/thermogloss & walnut stain) were maple/poplar/maple.
I love those 3 ply shells. I had a pretty large shell bank of them, at one time. Now I'm down to a 26, 14, 16, 18, and a much older Club Date 20, 12, 14.
I would not waste your time looking for a Modular tom mount for that tom. I would stick with the original plan to get an Atlas mount. The Modular mounts were 1" diameter tubing and the "down tube" was a small knurled affair meant to go in the bass drum mounted receiver. I played some Classic Maple kits in the early 90s with this hardware and it is the last word in super-heaviness.Well this didn't happen the seller decided to keep it dam it. I have seen this one classic maple it would be hanging on a stand on a different mount that hole will be exposed will this change the sound in a bad way or not
I'm just wondering with that hole exposed would it affect the sound of the drum.I would not waste your time looking for a Modular tom mount for that tom. The tom mount affixed to the shell - the big hunk of metal - will affect the sound more than the hole. If you install an Atlas mount, I recommend removing the existing tom bracket. You might be able to find a plastic plug that fits the hole at a hardware store if you're worried about the looks.I'm just wondering with that hole exposed would it affect the sound of the drum.
Well then you're familiar already with the sonic differences. The hole wouldn't be a problem (other than aesthetics) ..... if you were to use some sort of suspension mount, or the Atlas mount. Like alparrott mentioned, I'd take the modular mount off the shell. That's a big old chunk of metal. I had a 15x12 with one of those mounts.Mines a 7 ply maple with 1 orphan 3ply maple.
What about a piece of gaffa about 1in square sounds stupid but it would look better than that chunk of metalThe tom mount affixed to the shell - the big hunk of metal - will affect the sound more than the hole. I mean, I personally would ride with a hole in the shell instead of a bit of tape. The hole in and of itself won't affect the sound. It will cause a bit of air to escape with each strike (like a larger vent hole), but you wouldn't really notice a difference. IMO a piece of tape looks horrible and I wouldn't put one on myself. What about a piece of gaffa about 1in square sounds stupid but it would look better than that chunk of metal
I have a bass drum with that mounting plate and it makes no difference whether plugged or left open.I'm just wondering with that hole exposed would it affect the sound of the drum.
