Legacy DD505 faulty hi-hat controller pedal?

Hi, we’ve recently bought our son a legacy dd505 second hand as a starter kit. Everything works fine apart from the hi-hat controller which he has to really stomp on to get the closed sound. He’s only a little lad and is finding this really difficult. I’ve adjusted the sensitivity of the controller as per manufacturers instructions but it hasn’t helped. Any other ideas? For now I’ve changed the hi-hat sound on the brain module so it is always closed, but that’s not a long term solution! Thanks for your help - total drum novice here and feeling very much out my depth!

If you're trying to find a replacement, the DD506 drum kit is a generic Chinese kit, also branded as Fame, Session Pro, Black Mamba or Medeli (the actual maker). I'd open up the hihat pedal and check the condition of the rubber piece that pushes the sensor. There are ways to make them more flexible if old (you can find tips if you look for hihat rubber actuator fix). Afaik only the Roland ones are sold separately. You will see where the rubber is touching the sensor strip, maybe add a little extra thickness to make it reach sooner (e.g. a furniture leg felt dot).
