Died too young... who knows where he might have gone in a more sober middle age? Think Gene Krupa when you see him play... a similar madness though Krupa obviously reined it in. Moon never lived long enough to do that
I love the sloppiness, its pre punk (part of his legacy) I feel like the term 'fill' had not been established until moon came along. the fills just go on and on, they are rolling, mashed, layers that never seem to end. And alas they did. I think its mostly just his raw energy.Would anyone care to enlighten me about Keith Moon? He is deemed a legend, yet I have never been impressed by his playing. I found his playing sloppy, especially in concert. I don't think he took his playing all that seriously. Maybe someone could help me out.

Someone could have seriously got hurt and maybe they did, but they are talking and laughing about it on the Howard Stern show! What else do you expect to hear on the Howard Stern show?!
Roger Daltrey remembers the infamous or famous (depending on your point of view) drum set explosion episode on the Smothers Brothers show.
"This very morning, after a night in the studio trying to crack a difficult song demo, I wake up realizing again—reminding myself, and feeling the need to remind the world—that my own particular kind of damage was caused by using earphones in the recording studio, not playing loud on stage," Townshend wrote on his web site Dec. 29When drummer Keith Moon blew up his drum set on stage, the explosion left Pete Townshend deaf in one ear. And eventually contributed to his future hearing loss.

Pete told me it was headphones that caused his hearing loss, but I can't help thinking the extreme volume contributed also, considering the deafening thunder The Who created onstage in their heyday. When I interviewed him, he had just gotten his first pair of hearing aids. I was surprised. I thought he'd been wearing them for years prior."This very morning, after a night in the studio trying to crack a difficult song demo, I wake up realizing again—reminding myself, and feeling the need to remind the world—that my own particular kind of damage was caused by using earphones in the recording studio, not playing loud on stage," Townshend wrote on his web site Dec. 29

I interviewed Pete years ago for Premier Guitar magazine. Not sure of the date, but the magazine cover showed the broken left half of a red Fender Telecaster Pete smashed at Asbury Park Convention Hall in the 60's.When was that interview, Bob?
