I think he actually only does a pretty good impression of a machine. His approach of essentially treating digital music as compositions to be performed live is pretty good. I know I have found it immensely influential in my playing and choice of equipment. Though in practice I prefer different sources of digital music as inspiration, for example various New Age and jungle. For example "If you look at what producers do"(As Jojo said), you will see that they often used samples of things like birds, and animal growls, screams, trains, sirens etc. Why not incorporate acoustic sources of these things in your playing's also? Why stop at simply acoustically imitating the digital drum samples?
