🤣🤣🤣Benito Urgu Hero!!!
Ha, yeah, I looked the band up once and discovered he is a comedy hero in Sardinia. I love how he walks into random shows, they beg him not to do Gambale Twist, and he does it anyway. Great work if you can get it!

Hi folks! New guy here. I recently retired as an airline pilot (Delta). Been playing drums since I was 15. I play gigs in the Atlanta area... mostly jazz and R&B. Anyway, here are the recommended questions answered...

Real name - Rick Meadors
Age - 65
How long have you been playing - 50 years
Origin of user name - my initials
Your top 5 drummers - That's hard. [gun to head and in no particular order] Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Joel Rosenblatt, Dave Weckl
Make of drumkit - I have two... Tama Starclassic Maple, Tama SLP Fat Spruce
Make of cymbal - Slight majority Zildjian... plus Bosphorus, Cymbal Craftsman, Istanbul, Funch, Johan Janicke, and one Timothy Roberts mod that was a 21" Sabian HHX Groove Ride.
Where do you practice - basement (see pics below)
Are you in a band - not currently
Do you play covers or originals - covers, but originals are cool too! Here's a cover we recorded in a corporate band I was playing with last year...
What style of music - pretty much anything except metal, prog rock, hip hop, or advanced latin styles
Favorite take out food - BBQ!
What country do you live in - USA
One really odd fact about yourself - I started college as a percussion performance major, ended with a business degree, and ultimately became an airline pilot for my career.
How did you start drumming - I had 7 years of piano, age 7 to 14. Picked up drums at age 15 and fell in love with it!

How do you like the Spruce kit?

How do you like the Spruce kit?
It's great! Mine is the smaller sizes (20x14 kick and 14x14 FT). The 12x8 tom that came with it had some wonky overtones that I couldn't seem to tune out of it. I had the opportunity to sell it separately (on Reverb) and buy a 12x8 Starclassic Maple tom to replace it for very little cost differential. The spruce kick sounds great and the spruce FT is really exceptional!

Interesting. Those kits caught my eye when they were introduced but the six lug floor tom weirded me out a bit but apparently it must be ok. Your post also caught my attention with your occupation. At one point in my life I was a Part 135 charter pilot. And here I thought that I was the only drummer with an ATP

Ha. It's more common than you'd think. Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 other Delta pilots I know that are drummers!

I got hit with the airline mandatory age 65 retirement back in September. I was still at the top of my game and having fun, so that was quite the bummer. I really miss flying and am starting to look for a part time flying gig. No age limit on Part 91 or 135. Will have to be just the right situation though, as I do want to leave time for enjoying retirement which of course includes drumming gigs!

Yeah, I really love that floor tom! That's the one drum off that kit that I actually like better than its counterpart on my Starclassic Maple kit. And that floor tom is no slouch!

Generally speaking, I'd almost always rather play the SCM's. Those drums are wonderful! But that Fat Spruce kit is lighter weight as well as quicker and easier to set up... so it gets the nod on a gig more often than one would think.

Welcome to the DW captain. It is a long story, but what you did as your day job was my first choice for a career many many moons ago. Circumstances changed and I ended up at a desk instead of the right or the left side seat.

By the way, very nice playing. Nice drum sets and that piano at the corner of the room looks good too. I always joke with drummers who complain about the high cost of drum gear. I always say, "Do not complain. Wait until Steinway & Sons gets into drum making business!!".

Thanks!! Well, that piano isn't a Steinway but it still cost more than both of my kits combined! The sad part is it seldom gets played unless I have a REAL piano player coming over for a jam or a rehearsal. For me, it's mainly been used as enticement to get a rehearsal to come to me instead of me having to lug my drums somewhere else. Not sure that was the best investment I ever made. lol But I do like having it too!

Welcome aboard! So much amazing information to be had here, from some incredibly knowledgeable folks (not me, heh).

Using brushes properly is an art that is lost on me. I truly appreciate it, I just haven't developed those skills.
(Not a lot of call for it in what I play in my little bar band.)

Enjoy!
