I'm Beginning to Doubt My Pork Pie Drum Throne

We practice normally for 2-3 hours with minimal breaks. I ain't gonna lie. My butt HURTS! It hurts BAD! I finally figured it out today. My Pork Pie Drum throne's soft padding seems to be breaking down. After a short time, my butt has sunk down to a hard, flat surface. Very uncomfortable. Lots of pain. When I switch back to my old Yamaha throne, all is well.

It's probably not Pork Pie's fault. They're a solid company. It's probably me. I'm getting old (60) and might need to upgrade to something with a back rest.

Any of you gentlemen experience this? Any recommendations?

I didn’t like the Pork Pie because it was TOO soft and squishy. It didn’t feel solid enough for me so I eventually ended up with the DW5000 throne which is much harder by comparison. The Pork Pie felt like sleeping on a super soft mattress - I sunk into it and had to work hard to move while on it. Maybe you should try one of those Carmichael thrones with the center channel so your tailbone isn’t squished on the seat?

My pork pie tractor style style throne is not very soft. Are you talking about the round seats?

If it's a simple round throne, maybe you could pull the staples from the seat cover and re-foam it (is that a word?). Mrs Smoke used to be a "frequent flyer" at most of the craft stores in Lansing, MI and I begrudgingly followed her on many occasions, so I know they have such stuff.

Or, just replace the throne top with something like this Roc-n-Soc. I never would have guessed you could replace just the seat...

And, while I hold you in high regard, A J, don't ask me to kiss your boo-boo and make it better.

I've used the same Roc-n-Soc tractor-style throne with backrest for more than 10 years and it never lets me down. It's heavy to carry, which is my only complaint. But the seat remains comfortable and the backrest is a huge blessing for my back. I don't usually lean on it while playing, but it feels so good to lean back with support between songs.

I've played on Pork Pie thrones for over 20 years now. If you are using a "Tractor-Style" throne, these are NOT the same as the "Big Boy" throne. A friend of mine has a Tractor-Style and it absolutely sucks compared to the Big Boy. They are not the same, even though pics of them both may be deceiving.

You can always order a RocNSoc backrest and mount it. That's what I did with great results. With that said, about 2 years ago, I switched to a DW 9120M, and I don't feel I need a backrest anymore. This is now the throne I travel with.

As opposed to my Tama First Chair Ergo warning post in 2007 (please forgive my late-30s arrogance), I can attest to the Ahead Spinal Glide drum throne's bang for the buck. It's by far the most well-made, comfortable - and expensive, but it allowed me to continue playing through severe hip and back pain (L3-4 fusion later). I paid $159 for mine, but I see the quality and comfort has caught on and the demand has driven the price accordingly ($235-260 now), depending on configuration.
Worth every penny even when healthy. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. This pic is 7 years and many hundreds of hours later:

This is the problem I have with my Tama round rider xl. When you first sit down it's very comfortable. After about 30 minutes it squishes down on itself, becomes very hard, very uncomfortable, and gets super warm. I have this Gibraltar super lightweight throne with gel in it that I use for gigs now. It's comfortable enough, much less warm, and weighs nothing.

I'm always weary of these thrones with a "gap" in the middle. I have hemorrhoids, I need support. If I used a throne like that I would have a serious "flare up".

There’s a sports osteopath on instagram who always warns against those middle gap thrones. He claims the benefit of not putting upward pressure on the tailbone is outweighed (literally) by the downward pressure of the spine putting strain on the pelvis at the center.

I'm digging that hollow-flake sparkle on that! Stunning.

Well, it's sparkle, and that makes it perfectly ok.

I'm glad I didn't get one. My chiropractor wasn't keen on them either.

i found that round thrones were giving me the biggest pain issue. I went from a Pearl to a Pork Pie, then a spinal glide. All were round and my legs would be in such pain after a long set i would limp away from the kit and the next day the pain was worse. It was the round edge putting pressure on my upper thigh, it radiated everwhere. I switched to a tractor style Gibraltar and the pain is gone! i used to stand up between songs for relief. For me it wasnt the softness but the shape.
