Identify this song and artist

I've recently been converting my old cassettes to digital . I came across this song and I can't think of who it's by or who the drummer is. I'll probably kick myself when I find out.

I'd describe it as instrumental prog fusion European-style but it could be an American artist for all I know. Drums, bass, keys and guitar. Nice when you're relaxing later in the evening.

I've attached the first 2 mins of the tune.

Nice try, Andy. A similar genre but I'm sure it's not Focus. The guitar sounds less biting than Jan A and there's no evidence of Thijs van Leer's trademark organ or piano sounds.

It's not Gong or Soft Machine either.

Here's another grab (it's a long song - about 12 mins)

We have a winner! Nice one, Alan. What's the story with SoundHound? I've not heard of it.

For a while the name wasn't on my radar because it's not the kind of music we normally associate with Mick Taylor. He had three drummers on that album - Pierre Moerlen from Gong, Richard Bailey, who's best known for playing (brilliantly) on Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow and some other guy. It sounds like it's Pierre on this track.

Interesting.I was at a friends house and he had an instructional video by Mick for how he plays slide guitar, and he really is quite good at that genre too.

SoundHound is an application for iPhone (and other phones) that compares the sound wave from a recording to a database. I saw your post as a challenge, and as you can see it worked, although I had to try it twice. Then it also gives associated links on the net (YouTube), so checking one of the links I knew it was right.
I think it's pretty amazing how fast it is able to recognize a tune that I would consider as pretty obscure, although I know who Mick Taylor is.

Theres another app called Shazam, that does the same, but it failed at this one (I only have the lite/free version, so maybe that's why!?)

I completely missed Mick on that list!

Mind you, I was so rattled to see Page a lowly number 5, I wasn't thinking straight either. :)

You have a problem with him being behind Jimi, Beck and Eric, and ahead of Bob Fripp, Brian May, David Gilmour and Pete Townshend?? Tough crowd.

But yeah "Mick Taylor" ... just one step from "John Smith" and maybe not a name to stand out in a list ...

Thanks for the info Alan. Pretty amazing, especially since it's not a fairly obscure recording ... it must be a huge database.

I'd be interested to see how it goes with some Oz music. I ripped this bluesy number from cassette last week. My guess is that the iPod gizmo would get this one :)

Was not Mick Taylor very briefly with the Rolliing Stones as well? The same guy? Or am I incorrect.

I enjoyed the Name That Tune. Make it a weekly contest!
