I strongly dislike non matching bass drum hoops

Do you mean hoops that don't match each other? Or hoops that don't go with the shell finish?

Which kits?

If you mean not fully finished hoops (natural wood insides) then I completely agree, it was the first thing I did with my new Starclassic Performer kit, swap the reso hoops with all laquered black hoops, instantly looks way better. I thought it was something done mostly with low end/mid/semi-pro kits though, to make high-end kits more desirable. I don't think the companies save a lot of money to not fully finish the hoops (at least I would pay a slightly raised price to get them fully finished), either that or the vast majority of drummers either don't care, or just happen to like them like that.

Beaver tail lugs, honestly any kind of lugs that aren’t tube/bridge lugs. Always had rotten luck with them.

Tube lugs on snaredrums but the Pearl fat ones look better. I'm not into non matching BD hoops AT ALL.

Flimsy hardware.

I can't speak for Trigger, but I was assuming he meant something like this:

I can't do it
It's so Stock catalog
square like the black tuxedo band uniform with the powder blue ruffled shirt
I'm a radical when it comes to hoops.

The question was asked "Why has non matching bass drum hoops become a trend on high end kits?" Let's keep it on topic. As everyone here is well aware, we don't do "Here's a list of every imaginable thing that I don't like" threads here. Please and thank you.

Sonor gives the option to contrast. Yamaha drums have hoops that match the shell. Different brands different options?

Non matching hoops are just a trend. That’s all. Design trends are a strange thing in consumer culture. Difficult to resist them, but if you wait them out they will go away.

A real estate agent told us to get rid of our granite countertops and replace them with synthetic plastic-y ones because ours looked dated. I told him it’s a sin to throw away granite and replace it with plastic, no matter what it looks like. And yea, eventually the granite will be trendy again.

That's funny, because I've actually always felt the opposite. Hoops with matching finish always looked more assembly line cheap to me. A finished shell with, say, hoops of natural wood or an elegant black, have that stately look of the really classic percussion instruments. I'm talking like old school marching band and 18th-19th century drums.

I'm guessing that's why it's trendy at the moment. Vintage, bespoke, custom are all in vogue right now, not to mention obsessions over wood species and over hoop resonance. Making your hoops stand out sort of taps into all of that.
