I may have let you guys talk me into making a mistake.

It makes sense to use hard cases if they're going to be loaded into a van or truck with the rest of the backline and PA but for most of us who drive to our own gigs, padded bags are good enough. I definitely make an exception for cymbals though, I have a Gator hard case for them and won't ever use a soft cymbal bag.

I have a mixture of hard and soft cases. In the end, for me it really doesn't matter. I'm a nerd. I handle all my drums and cymbals more carefully than a newborn baby. Even the cases themselves barely have a scratch. :)

sorry those are the weirdest bags I ever knew existed
for rims and extended mounts; ok.

Simply upsizing the bag will make life so much easier. RIMS or not. Sure they wiggle a little inside but my PR bags are fleece lined and rigid enough that they will never collapse. Since I haul my own gear, I don't have to worry about much.

As far as gig storage goes, I have two choices. Either behind/off stage or back in the van. I nest all the bags including the cymbal bag so I have one bass drum bag and one wheeled hardware bag to hide. One trip and good to go.

I've never tried those Ahead bags, but they look awesome and appear to be just about perfect for the gigging drummer.

I love my Hardcase cases, sorry ...🤷‍♂️

I have a set of Hardcases that kept my old Tama Rockstars looking like new for over a decade. I used to drive a pickup truck and always threw my drums in the back (lids facing up) with no covering of any kind. I don't know how many times those cases got rained on, snowed on, etc. in my travels, my drums always arrived bone dry. The straps are easy to repair when they break, and replacement clasps are available at Walmart for a minimal price. I've had them for about 30 years, and I wouldn't hesitate to take them out today.

So after all the complaining I did about how I prefer hard cases over bags and that I almost always use my cart, I had three gigs in a row this weekend where I had to carry my drums, and I was driving a rental car. The bags worked out well this weekend. The Ahead bass drums bag is easier than my Drum Seeker bag but still more work than a hard case.

There's no shame in going back and forth on opinions. New experiences bring with it reevaluation.

For example, a few years ago I upgraded my cymbal cases to the really nice SKB hard shell rolling cases and sold all of my soft cases for cymbals. However, guess what I've been on the lookout for recently? Freakin' cymbal bags.

The cycle never ends, I swear.
