I drilled holes in my kick

Well I did it , the unthinkable for of us. I drilled holes in my new Kick Drum. I bought my new Ludwig kit a few months ago and I bought a DW rail to hold the rack Tom on the kick drum. I'm just now getting around to put in the rail on. I wasn't really sure if I wanted it on there or not. The first thing I noticed was my 12 inch rack Tom had a lot more tone to it, it just sounded a lot better. Then I took off the single ply head and put on a very old Evans G2, off of my Tama kit and I like it even better. One of these days I'm going to get new 2-ply heads for both of the toms. I'm real happy with having the rail on there, it's just always seemed right to me to have a tom mounted on the kick. It just feels right for me, but hey I'm kind of old so go figure.

Looks like tou have the same issue I do. The memory lock on the rail doesn’t engage the the arm very well as the rail is curved. It does work a little better if you flip it over so the bolt is on the bottom rather than on the top.

If anyone has a great solution, I’d love to hear it.

Yeah I was kind of disappointed in the memory lock. I'll try turning it over and see how that works thanks

I'm not a fan of drilling into a drum shell, but I say do whatever you gotta do to make your life easier and better. Looks great!

I know that it goes against conventional wisdom and trends to drill a virgin kick to be able to mount toms on it, but to me, it just makes things simpler, and any sonic deficiencies it might bring are probably going to be lost in the context of the mix anyway.

Loosk good!

Looks good! I had the same rail on my previous Ludwigs, and it worked really well. On my current kit I used the atlas rail mount to avoid drilling the drum.

I did have to add a rubber strip in the main clamp to get it slip free. I’m happy with it now, but out of the box, I’d have to say the DW unit is the better functioning rail set up.

I was real interested in the atlas rail mount until I found out it won't work with my lugs LOL
