I’ve committed to the 18” floor tom

I have hard cases for all my drums that I’ve collected over the years (a mix of Humes&Berg and SKB) but I’ve never gotten a 18” floor tom case because it’s not a constant drum I’m always using - in a pinch I can go out with just the 16” which makes life easier.

But since I have this Rogers lacquer kit with an 18” floor tom, I kinda like having that drum with me. So I’ve finally committed and bought it an SKB case today - a bit expensive but worth it for what’s going in there - I’d hate for any of these vintage drums to suffer “dumb” accidents that could’ve been avoided. But I did get a nice deal with free shipping.

Now I can literally put all the drums in the back of my truck and not worry about them in transit - even in rainy weather!

I like the 18" floor tom on my DW set. I also have a Slingerland set with an 18." They sound just fine, but need a little dampening for more focus.

Carrying an 18" floor tom on a regular basis ... I admire your dedication.
I’ve been since I got this kit and been feeling guilty moving it around without a case - there’s been a couple of instances where the drum could’ve been damaged.

18" floor toms are unwieldy but great, I admire the dedication. The only thing cooler and thumpier than an 18" tom is an actual 20" or 22" kick propped up on legs as a floor tom/gong drum.

I suppose it is like carrying around an extra bop bass drum 😉. But I’ve tried 14” and 16” floor toms and really hate 14” floor toms. It’s like those are too big to be an effective rack tom, and too small to be an effective floor tom. To me it’s like the “unwanted” drum!

I’m with you for the 14”, never like them as floor Tom neither rack Tom.

my 18” is actually pushed out more to the side rather than behind me.
Yes, that makes more sense to me, than having it straight back. I've have a 14" FT and I have to agree with your comments, in that it has a narrow tuning range in terms of sweet spot. I've noticed this on all the 14's that I've had to tune up.

I don't know, I'd have to see proof of this 18" (with its family) before I'd believe any of this horse-sh*t.

Don't give Bo any more crazy ideas. :ROFLMAO:
Doooo it…
