How far is your commute to practice?

I will happily travel for productive rehersals. I use the drive time to listen to sets.

For my main project we rarely rehearse. We did one a couple of weeks back for a show featuring two additional singers. That was just over an hour (each way) for a 2hr rehearsal, and well worth it. With the regular line-up, we learn new songs on our own and run through them during soundcheck (if needed).

My other project, which plays out less, we schedule rehearsals in the weeks before bookings. Usually one a week for three or four weeks to run the show. Like the other band, everyone comes ready to play. Those rehearsals happen in town, about 30mins from my house.

I travel quite a bit for shows. Typically out 3 of 4 weekends a month, plus some week nights here and there. Only a couple of local bookings so far this year.

I have driven over 500km for a single booking. I won't leave my house to jam, noodle, run some tunes, etc. I hated it when I was younger. Older me can't sit through it.

I practice on my electric kit and practice pad at home. My bands rehearsal studio where I keep most of my acoustic gear is about a 15 minute drive during traffic. I have 24 hour access to the rehearsal studio so I can go in whenever.

The last band I was in practiced in a town that was a little over a hour away form me. Where I now practice by myself in 25 minutes away. I am meeting some musicians tonight to talk about starting a band. So I am sure that the most I will have to drive is 30 minutes. Peace and goodwill.

My rehearsal space is 20 minutes away.

An hour away? If it was weekly rehearsals indefinitely, that would probably be tough for me. If it's for a month or two to build up a setlist, then gig time, I would probably be OK. But would you be OK gigging regularly an hour away?

A spinoff from this thread should be: Are we soon going to be able to practice remotely in the very near future?
Meaning everyone in their own place all in different places but connected online in a streamed live session .

I think that will be the future of rehearsals in which electronic drums seem to be tailor made for.

my metal band is a 40 minute drive both ways. Been doing this now for 22 years!!! I love to drive, and the truck is my Zen/alone area. Get to listen to music and have down time on that trip

the other 3 bands are within 15 minutes of the house...a shorter amount of Zen/music/truck time

An old guitar player friend of mine is starting a new band of top tier players and is giving me the opportunity to take the reins on drums.

The plan for this project is to start booking gigs that are not the 100/person bar gig. Hopefully more money, bigger gigs, weddings, corporate events, etc.

I had only 2 practices with the band I just left. I had perhaps 4 with the previous band of 1 year to learn 4 new songs.
We just didn't practice together.

Yes, $100 for a 3 hour show of drumming is becoming a turn off. I'm getting done with it soon. For something like you're describing, I'd be willing to practice 4-6 times max.

The place we currently rehearse in is a 20 min drive for me. Place before that was 30 mins and before that place 10 to 15 mins.
30 to 45 mins is acceptable for me.

2 bands which share the same bass player, we rehearse in my studio above the garage. So he leaves his bass amp there plus I have a PA & electric piano set up. Saves me travelling.

New band rehearses about 40 min away.

Most gigs are up to an hour away.

And how far is it by bus / car? ;)
Glad you asked! :) 150m less for both. For going by bus I have to walk around 1/4th of the distance through my village. So the mode of transport depends on weather, what I have to carry and how much I plan to drink at the bar.

The problem is, I'm the farthest away from their spot, at about an hour each way. They are all under 40 minutes.
An hour? In Toronto, that's how long it takes me to get downtown from my place, travelling about 17 kilometres or 10.5 miles.
Then again, that's one of the reasons I plan to leave Toronto next year.

I live in a town so small it is actually called a village, which is about an hour away from just about any place that would have a gig. Peace and goodwill.

I live 20 minutes drive away from where my band rehearses which is just fine. I have previously played in bands that required longer drives; I found that 45 minute drive (one way) was tolerable but anything longer (1 h) became tiresome long term.

About 30 minutes. The bass player lives near me & we share this issue. But it's worth it.
