Listening now, it's clear Imagine Dragons drummer Daniel Platzman could be replaced by a drum machine, but he announced today he's leaving the band with 6 Top Five hits to its credit and 19 songs overall that have charted on Billboard's Hot 100.

The Berklee grad's stated reason for leaving the band after five platinum albums is to do more film scoring and composing. The announcement comes during the band's tour of big amphitheaters.

Billboard's report doesn't have any details on whether Imagine Dragons is holding Spinal Tap-like auditions for a human replacement. Son of Vistalite Black wishes Platzman well on the change in his career path that he'll surely regret. One could, of course, compose during the 22 hours a day one's band is not playing.

Or live performance may simply not be fulfilling to him anymore. Artists' goals are important to them and success isn't always about money. I'm pretty sure he can comfortably walk away from touring.

Especially if his drum parts are so mechanical that he could be mistaken for a drum machine, he might easily decide it was too tedious to keep grinding that out night after night, and might have enough money to make that choice.

I wish I could remember the names of those involved, but I have something of a connection here. My first drum teacher, Honey Voshell, taught a gentleman that went on to teach music at a university. One of that gentleman's students was Daniel Platzman.

I only know this because I happened to visit my old teacher while on a trip to the East Coast a few years ago and he told me about it. The funny part was, Honey kind of shook his head about the style of music. I can't quote him, but he said something like, I'm glad he's so successful, but I don't think he had to go to school to learn how to play that stuff. Lol

Everyone's situation is different of course. Daniel has done well - especially if he's a vested member of the band and shares in the writing/publishing - and depending on his debt structure, he could easily move away from touring as a steady-ish income.

I notice they're playing a lot of the same places I play with AL... maybe I could stay home too!
