Help with Yamaha Dtxplorer kick pad

Hello everyone, I'm new and this is my first post.

I have been playing drums since I was approximately 16 years old (currently I have 35 omg) but due to situations I was inactive for several years. I very recently obtained a Yamaha DTxplorer kit, in the past I had already had experiences with electronic kits (Alesis DM10).

In any case, this Yamaha kit is a little old and I understand that it is discontinued, in any case I feel quite comfortable using it while I get a little rust off XD. The only thing that doesn't convince me is the kick pad (in addition to the pedal, which is also something I want to change) since I feel it is very insensitive, without rebound, and quite noisy. Maybe someone who has knowledge and experience could recommend another kick pedal to upgrade? Of course, it would have to be compatible with the DTxplorer module.

I leave you a photo of the kit and good groove to everyone!

The easiest, quickest, and cheapest solution is a new beater. The felt beater you have there is very worn and those tend to compact and become firm when they get to that point, this is still fine for acoustic drums and would probably feel fine on a mesh epad (with a beater patch of course) however this will not feel good or respond well on the rubber pad with your Yamaha kit.

Something like this will dramatically increase the feel and response of the pad you have:
I see you are in Switzerland, I'm not sure what big gear retailers you have but if you search something like "tennis ball bass drum beater" you should find it. Gibraltar, kat, drumtec and many others offer this same type of thing.

You also could take a tennis ball, cut a slit (pull the guts out, if it has any?), and slip that over your current beater.

I just ordered a pair of beaters with sponges or something like that for a very cheap price on Aliexpress! When they arrive I'll tell you how it goes!
Thanks for your answer!

Also don't be afraid to play around with the sensitivity settings in the module. I'm more experienced with alesis ekits but I'm sure Yamaha offers some kind of sensitivity settings you can play with.

KP65 is a great pad. Don't forget you can adjust the sensitivity on the pad itself with the level knob, as well as tweak it in the module.

As to replacing the pedal; it's a very very personal decision and I'd always recommend trying a load out if possible - even so far as taking the pad to a drum store so you can test drive it with a few pedals.

Man you are legend!
I just found the knob to adjust the sensitivity and now it sounds much better, I didn't know I had that option.

The thing is that this drum was a gift from some musician friends who had a rehearsal room and bought a much better new drum, so while I try it I'm discovering its functions.

As for the pedal, I'm not going to change it because I have a double pedal in Argentina (where I'm originally from) from my old days: Gibraltar avenger db11 or something like that, and I plan to go visit after the summer and bring it back so I think that with That and some good beaters will be a much better situation.

Thanks again guys!

Glad to help :)

Well I just wanted to update you. Buy a direct drive longboard double pedal by Alli express. Yes by Alli express. 400 dollars with shipping included. The pedal is quite good for its price, obviously I don't think it's like an axis, trick, etc. But for half the price I repeat, it's pretty good.

I just wanted to ask you that I keep feeling the kick pad very hard and with too much "bounce". Any suggestions? Has anyone tried to glue these adhesive tapes with foam? Do you think it would work?

I left you some photos of the pedal :)

That particular kick pad doesn't have any adjustability options for "feel" like a mesh head unfortunately. You could try putting something on it but it may reduce sensitivity. Your only option may be trying different beaters. Another idea: my local hardware store sells these small circular pieces of thick felt with adhesive backing that are meant for furniture and cabinets, maybe try putting those on your beaters?

Those beaters probably don't have much "give". Try other beaters - I've never had a feel prob with a KP65, TBH [pic - premier EDP300 with stock beater - note depth of felt, QT kick patch - I always patch my kicks.]

Yes - a couple of felt furniture / wood floor pads may help. Note the most give on the KP65 is in the centre of the pad. There's less give away from the centre. (or you can always use two singles and two pads ;) )
