I will right all of ur guys ideas into one big paper and repost it for every body here on drummer world ok thanks guys

Not to be a snob, but if you're going to be writing a whole paper, please use spell check, proper capitalization, and punctuation. Nobody wants to be subjected to 1,000 words that look like you texted them from your cell phone.

L8R dude!

I'm just a high school kid, but I really don't see your focus on this. What a drummer is could be 20 pages on the history and functions of a drummer; it would most likely be a very objective paper. On the other hand you also said your paper was to be about what a drummer should be. To me, that is objective and you will have to argue something. I guess I'm just looking for some clarity.

If I spelled like you do when I was fifteen, Mean ugly old nuns used to hit me with a steel edged ruler and make me stay after school and write on the blackboard "I will learn how to spell" one hundred times!

If you read through the numerous posts that already exist here on DW, you will have more than enough subject matter for your paper entitled, "What A Drummer Is And Should Be"

The fellow members of this board have already written the data for your paper in numerous threads!
Happy reading!

You will find that you are in good company; many people (sadly) have difficulties with spelling.

"Bad spellers of the world untie!"

Um, I thought he was kidding around ...

Mrod ... whut ... er, what a drummer is and should be. I take it you don't mean as a human being but talking about a drummer's role in music. That varies depending on the genre, and even the drummers here disagree to the point where there is much discord and gnashing of teeth.

Do you want to talk about drummers as accompanists or drummers playing a lead or equal role in music-making?

Thats true Polly, There are numerous slants to this story.
Perhaps Mrod could break up his paper into sections like ...

The drummer as timekeeper and rhythm provider
The drummers role to color music
The drummers persona and the identity of the band
etc, etc, etc.

I attempted this last quarter. After thinking hard on this huge topic, I decided that it was just too huge to write about effectively. So after much scaling down and scaling back, I ended up writing about Led Zeppelin. I probably could've done the whole project on the first few seconds of "When the Levee Breaks" if I felt like it. The point of this is that, you may have picked a topic that is far too broad. "What a Drummer Is and Should Be" is not just a huge piece of subject matter, but it also varies based upon who you ask. Terry Bozzio will tell you something completely different from Meg White. This aspect, of course, could be the subject of the entire paper itself. You could discuss the varied beliefs of different schools of drummers. I don't know, considering that you chose it (right?), you should have *some* base knowledge on the subject. Good Luck.

One more thing, CLEAN UP THE SPELLING. everyone said it, but, its the best advice we can give so far. Seriously, check your dictionary. Good Luck again.

Wouldn't it be more like...

Tha drummur az tymkeepur and rithm providur
Thu drummerz roll 2 kuller muyzik
the drummerz pursownuh and identutee of thu band, etc, ect, cte...

Seriously though... Saying you are a high school kid is a ridiculous excuse for the horrible grammar. Taking pride in your writing (and spelling) will give a much more professional image and will also more than likely result in a more favorable response.
If you turned in a resume with grammar like that to a potential employer, it would be thrown directly into the trash. Just try to be more professional, that's all. And use spellcheck...

Terry Bozzio will tell you something completely different from Meg White.

I take your point and agree in principle that drummers of different styles may see a drummer's role very differently.

Not wanting to be a nipicker (but being strangely compelled to be one :) from what I've seen of Meg's interviews, I doubt her general view would would be wildly different from Terry's - at least in tone, if not in depth of musical education. Meg seems well aware that the very specialised role she has with WS is by no means from the be-all-and-end-all of drumming. From what I've gathered she's a big fan of hotshot drummers, even if that's not what she does. Me too :)

Now Moe Tucker is a different kettle of fish. She has strong opinions that drummers should be timekeepers. While she plays very simply she's not necessarily wedded to simplicity because she loves African drumming, so it seems her thing is the idea of laying down rhythms without being reactive to melody instruments. I can see the attraction, although I enjoy reactive drumming too.

Meanwhile, I'd imagine that Terry would have a very broad view since he's done it all - from straight 2 and 4 through to Zappa and beyond.

It would help to know how long this paper is supposed to be because then we could work out how broadly to address the issue.

Bob, I don't think going through this site would he helpful unless you had a spare week @ 24/7 to pick through the differing opinions, fights, jokes and digressions :) I like the way you described those three roles, though.

See, I don't know - I think you might be wrong there. I've never heard anyone here disagree with each other!

Furst and formost a drummer should be rediculuss like me.

I stand with the good doctor on this one!!

As for "what a drummer is and what he should be"..........I'm pretty sure Led Zeppelin rote, sorry.....wrote a song about it........excellent bass line btw.

Then again, in the words of Billy Joel......You may be write, I may be crazy!!

BTW anyone want money on the fact the OP is pulling the piss?? I'll wager he is!!

You are so wrong. I totally disagree with you. And whichever you choose between feel/technique I choose the opposite.
Oh yeah? What if I choose feel and technique? You're suddenly fired from your band, aren't you? Ha!
