Terry Bozzio will tell you something completely different from Meg White.
I take your point and agree in principle that drummers of different styles may see a drummer's role very differently.
Not wanting to be a nipicker (but being strangely compelled to be one
from what I've seen of Meg's interviews, I doubt her general view would would be wildly different from Terry's - at least in tone, if not in depth of musical education. Meg seems well aware that the very specialised role she has with WS is by no means from the be-all-and-end-all of drumming. From what I've gathered she's a big fan of hotshot drummers, even if that's not what she does. Me too
Now Moe Tucker is a different kettle of fish. She has strong opinions that drummers should be timekeepers. While she plays very simply she's not necessarily wedded to simplicity because she loves African drumming, so it seems her thing is the idea of laying down rhythms without being reactive to melody instruments. I can see the attraction, although I enjoy reactive drumming too.
Meanwhile, I'd imagine that Terry would have a very broad view since he's done it all - from straight 2 and 4 through to Zappa and beyond.
It would help to know how long this paper is supposed to be because then we could work out how broadly to address the issue.
Bob, I don't think going through this site would he helpful unless you had a spare week @ 24/7 to pick through the differing opinions, fights, jokes and digressions
I like the way you described those three roles, though.
