Has any ever had Costochondritis from Drumming?

Very Sorry that Your experiencing this. Sending Prayers upstairs to the Good Lord above for a full recovery and that You can get back to hitting the skins with abandon soon. 🙏
Thanks for your prayers PaisteGuy... can't wait to get back on the kit!

All I can do now is just imagine myself on the kit because that's my happy spot.

Unfortunately I have to lay low for now.

Thanks again drum buddy.

No, not me! I didn't take the JAB and I never will! I have never even taken a flu shot and I never will either. And just recently I remember cutting my hand deeply washing a glass and they were trying to talk me into a tetanus shot and I said no way. I don't want any of their needles in me. No thank you... stay away!
I hope you are better now. Sending good vibes your way.

Maybe look into open handed playing if that keeps your chest in a more open/equal state

I had three bouts of it 10 years apart in my 20’s , 30’s and 40’s. Many causes for it . The one in my 20’s I’m pretty sure was viral in nature causing inflammation of the cartilage attaching ribs to sternum .
The on in my 30’s was impact related , kicked in the chest at work .
The one in 40’s was overuse while trying to get into shape after a health scare.

The first bout was the most painful and hurt to move or even take a deep breath. Sharp deep pains from front to back .

Like you I don’t like to take pain meds or
anti-inflammatory meds if I don’t have to but it was necessary. It was usually prescribed 6 or 8 hundred milligram motrin for a short duration . During that first bout I suffered for two months before seeing the doc because I thought I pulled something . After 3 -5 days of the Motrin it was gone . Inflammation begets more inflammation even with rest in many cases . So I took the meds and it disappeared fast !!!
It’s a bit over 15 years since the last episode .
Shallow breathing and not fully expanding the rib cage can cause it also . There’s no full range for awhile then you do something beyond the full current range of the ribs and sternum and bam …… it’s back . I’ve done stretches and deep breathing exercises since the last episode and since learning more and have been good since .
IT IS severely painful . It was for me a sharp tearing pain worse than my widow maker heart attack this past January which was painful but more an intense center chest soreness. My advice ( but speak to your doctor) is take the anti inflammatory and once inflammation is gone and your healed up look up breathing exercises and stretches for costochondritis . Good luck and heal fast 👍🏼

Wow! It seems like you've been through a lot.

That's exactly what the doctor ordered was 600 mg of ibuprofen but I was putting it off because I was afraid it's going to ruin my kidneys. Maybe I'll take it for a couple of days and then hopefully it will be gone.

I was reading anxiety and costochondritis go hand in hand and they got that right because I was wondering what the heck is going on here. Also you're right... it can cause shallow breathing... anything can aggravate it. So you can imagine what drumming can do while having it!

I'm laying low for a while till I get better.

Also, I was reading anything to do with repetitious movement in the upper body. Well what do you think drumming is? It's constant beating those drums and smashing those cymbals.

Thank you for the well wishes drum buddy. I appreciate your input... we're all learning.

And The Beat Goes On!

It’s anxiety that can cause shallow breathing in the first place leading to minimal range of the cartilage connections from rib to sternum. After long periods of shallow breathing ( months to years) range of motion is decreased . Then when you go beyond that range of motion caused by shallow breathing due to anxiety it can cause inflammation ( costchondritis) . But …….. shallow breathing caused by costichondritis ( and the pain associated with it) alone no doubt can bring on anxiety or worsen it if you already have causing a prolonged cycle of both I’d imagine . Every medication comes with risks . Prescriptions and over the counter as well . It’s a question of benefit outweighing the risk analysis we must each decide ( along with our doctor ) to determine what we do . For me , it was a no brainer . That inflammation needed to go to be functional and to heal and prevent it going forward .
I’m unable to take NSAIDS now due to blood thinners so I’m doing all that I can so I don’t have to take them until I get off the thinners for the two stents .
I’m fortunate,…… that heart attack shoukd have killed me ( 10-15% survival rate ) or at the least caused more damage . As of last echo and stress test, I have little to almost negligible damage to the heart muscle .

I’ve had numerous injuries and a few health scares . I just keep educating myself and moving forward to improve . No other choice really .
My mindset is always that there’s others who are worse off, and that helps to keep perspective and balance .

I tell my wife that …… physically , life tried to chew me up and crap me out . But I’m like corn . Sorry to all for that image 😉😂.

I experienced pain and swelling where the sternum meets the ribs, but never from drumming. Weight training / bench press.

Yikes sorry to hear that, hopefully it will subside.
I think weight training can cause this condition particulalry like so many people you don't havee the proper form. I didn't start Weight Training until I hit 45 years of age. I over did it with a Barbell squat and tore the meniscus in the right Knee ( I have a 1" shorter right leg from a fractured femur in 1966 at 15 yo). Now that knee is Bone on Bone with Knee replacement inevitable down the forseeable future. Pertaining to Costochrondritis (Inflammation of the connective tissue in the chest / sternum/ Ribs), oh yeah, Bench Pressing could contribute to that. One must beware pressing too heavy a weight (when you get too overzealous & Macho) that you can hurt your shoulders / rotary cuffs - Like I did - which still hurt me to this day at 73 YO. AsI posted previously, one must also look to the health / condition of your Cervical Spine - a major force that can (and will in my case) affect the nerves going up and down from there. I have also found that certain exercises / stretches are very helpful and using a Thera Gun (or similar) to massage the area are very helpful. Using certain therapeutic Rubs are good as well..... Penetrix, Hemp Oil rubs, Icey Hot, Ben Gay , etc.

I don't know what a Thera gun is but I do have a Theracane and that has been very helpful to rub the knots out of my back.

It's a deep tissue therapy massage gun.
And you would definitely need someone to perform that therapy on your back... you could never reach it. But the Theracane you can do yourself.

I have aoth a Theragun (different machine an Addsfit - more reasonably priced) - using it on my chest as I write this. I also have that BackJoy "S" shaped massage stick which is good for attacking the Knots in back /Shoulder muscles. For me, most, if not all of my upper body misery stems from the Cervical Spine. With lots of disc issues, Bulging disc, arthritis on the vertebrae and Facet Joints and thinning discs, it is affecting my Neck, Chest and shoulders/arms. Cervical Instabilities can affect much more as well. In addition, I wear a Posture Correcting shoulder harness on many days, as well as a Lumbar back brace . I try anything that can help alleveiate the paisn and stiffness generated by the Spinal Arthritis.

Sorry to hear about your issue. Sternum pain just dominates your life. I had something similar going on, just in case it helps you or anyone, mine was a rib getting stuck out of place. The pain would slowly build over several days and was worst at night, which prevented me from sleeping. I felt totally helpless. A doctor at urgent care popped it back in place the first time and I had instant relief, but then it came back. I went back to urgent care and the other doc said nothing they can do. Tried a chiropractor and they seemed eager to charge my insurance and were not interested in solving the problem. I eventually found that I could pop the rib back in myself using a tennis ball, and finally the problem went away. The pain was in front and center of my sternum, but the rib that was slipping out was in my lower-middle back area. Doctors were surprisingly little help

Oddly, my issue also came at a time where I finally got a practice space and started practicing way more than I ever had before…

Sorry to hear all that you went through.

I'm trying to just lay low and ease myself back into drumming... a few days ago I drummed thru 3 songs, the next day 6 songs and yesterday I might have played 8 songs and I didn't feel good at all. I felt it coming back again and stopped immediately. So I have to listen to my body and wait and ease myself into drumming again.

It was all good info though, thanks for sharing.
