Good affordable cymbal bags?

I currently do not have any bags for my drums or cymbals. I'm looking to get a cymbal bag while MF is having their 20% off accessories sale. I found a Road Runner Boulevard II Backpack Cymbal bag for $80 that qualifies. Can anyone attest to its quality or could you recommend what you like to use?

The bag will mainly be used to haul cymbals to friend's houses to jam. No current plans to start playing live at bars, etc. yet so not sure I need anything hardshell or heavy duty.

I like Reunion Blues cymbal bags. I bought an RB Continental Midnight bag in good condition at a pawn shop for $50.00 (crazy find).

With your stated price point, here are some additional options. My choice would be the Paiste or Zildjian bag or the Humes and Berg hard shell case (cymbals are worth protecting).

you get an old hi hat clutch- felt top and bottom- put it (up) thru your 'cymbal set Hat/middle/ride.. Ride down first, Clutch up thru, then second cymbal(s), on ride, then hi hats, on top last; ; Cut towels hole in center cloths- between each cymbal. Drop (more towels at bottom of bag- into Bag; Zipper up and off you go..
- you don't need pockets and dividers- the Clutch will keep them all-centered-

Yeah maybe I’ll splurge and go hardshell since it’s 20% off and I got points to use.

I like this one (Meinl Professional), and it's only slightly above your budget (typically $99). They might be on sale every now and again. It has two internal dividers in the main compartment, one in the hi-hat pocket, backpack straps AND a shoulder strap.

I think the Road Runner bag looks fine. I like that it has a stick bag pocket on the outside. I wish it had a shoulder strap (but NOT backpack straps) and I wish it was clear what size the hi hat pocket is, but otherwise it looks perfectly capable.

I have the Zildjian premium bag and it is a great bag, but it is also quite a bit more expensive. As long as there is some padding and it will hold your biggest cymbal, I think any cymbal bag is better than nothing if you're just needing something to help schlep your cymbals out to jam..

I will say I'm not a fan of hard cases. I have one and I almost never use it. First, the lack of a shoulder strap isn't great, but it's a lot more cumbersome to get cymbals in and out of it than a zip up bag.

I think I'm seeing a shoulder strap in the 2nd photo of the Road Runner bag:

Is that what you were hoping to see?

I have a road runner bag probably 10 years old it's held up pretty good. It's a twenty inch and I bought a twenty two inch cym some years ago so I don't use it all the time now but it seems to be pretty good. It has backpack straps that I've never used zippers are holding up good and it has dividers. All in all I think it's a good bag. Not as good as $100+ bags but I think mine was around $60 back then

I think I’ll add it to my cart then! Sounds like a good bag for the money. I’m not a touring drummer so this should work for me for a while.

I used one 22” Reunion Blues all-leather cymbal bag for 30 years that cost me $350 back then. But it doesn’t matter what you’re doing, moving cymbals always invites damage. When I went to Paiste, I was determined not to have those cymbals standing on their edges at all, so I invested in a 24” SKB cymbal vault. And it’s nice not having 40lbs. of cymbals hang off my right shoulder these days. I look at what the case is protecting to determine how much to spend on the case.

I hear you. I’m brand new to the bag market so I had no idea where to begin or what to look for based on my needs.

Yeah, I missed that! I've been moving my cymbals around the last couple of days and that strap makes all the difference.

I also realized that my drum bags I bought last year are Road Runner and I'm more than happy with the quality and construction. I wouldn't hesitate getting another Road Runner bag if I needed one.

Avoid the cheap Paiste one. It barely holds one cymbal at 20" and the zipper broke easily.

Ended up buying the Road Runner bag I posted originally. It was 20% eligible, had good reviews, and a couple guys seem to acknowledge it's a good brand.

When I got stuff direct from Paiste, I also got their 24" professional cymbal bag (I think those retail for around $129) and that's a pretty solid bag although I've yet to use it since my cymbal vault does all the work these days. But the Paiste bag is nice and stiff, with a big padded bottom edge and it has built-in cloth dividers. That could work for you without breaking the bank.

If I was looking for a budget bag, I'd look into the new Barton bags.

This!

I have both...the 22" and 24" SKB cymbal vault. Either one of those go to my gigs. I also have a couple soft bags that I use if I'm taking fewer cymbals to a smaller gig but the vaults get the most use.

It's best to avoid "economy" anything when we're carrying a bunch of nice cymbals.

I have the "not economy" 24" Paiste bag. It even holds 16" hats. I prefer to use a case but this bag has served me well.

Concur. For some reason, my Zildjians weren’t susceptible to edge bends, but I’ve seen more Paistes with edge bends over the years that when I got mine, I swore I’d never rest them on their edges. And the vault helps with that. The few extra seconds it takes to put them in the vault is worth it.
