Getting bearing edges redux—-need advice

Just got home from Raleigh, and I had much fun meeting Cameron of Brownie Drums. He had 3 or 4 of his snare shells finished and ready to be drilled, and the finishes are outstanding. One had what looked almost like a 3d version of the old Rogers Mardi Gras.

So he’s going to edge all 4 toms and fix the uneven drilling in the 14 due to a poor concert tom conversion, but he said the shells were in otherwise fine shape. As far as the snare, I brought it, and what JDA said would happen happened. However, he promised not to change the character and only do what he thinks will improve it, bearing in mind how much I love it as is. After seeing his edges up close, I’m pretty confident he gets the vibe.

Now the huge news…

A while back I bought 6 of the L&L repro badges from Bum Wraps, and they look great but the holes are too small. They should be the same size on my snare as the toms, standard size for a long time. But I never returned them because I envisioned someone one day telling me they could make them fit properly and you’d never know the difference. So my snare will get its 85 year old nasty badge back, and the toms get the new looking repros!!!

It was a good day.

These drums are not valuable, Harry ;). They’re loser orphans that were put through the mill by previous owners.
Sir, those drums are winners. In spite of their previous abuse they have found a loving home where they are being brought back to a healthy state, put together in a tight knit family and dressed up in snazzy Ampeg clothes. Those drums have escaped the island of misfit toys.

Well I guess they did, didn’t they? Thank you, Tris. That’s a much better way to look at it. They don’t have collector’s value but they will be primo when they’re done, I believe. And then I’ll have to get to stepping up my game and play more often!

I just got back from Raleigh, and I’m stoked to no end! The edges Cameron did are muy bueno, the toms all sound a lot more uniform, and the snare got new edges and beds and sounds the same but better, if you know what I mean. He’s trying to talk me into ditching the diecast hoops, though, which I’ll probably get a set of 2.3’s just to have. But he preserved the round over edges it came with, so I’m very happy.

I’ll post a few teaser pics in a little while but I still have to wrap the 14” so full set pics will be 2 or 3 days away. In the meantime, here’s the Brownie Drums website, plus they have a Facebook page.

Good to hear! Looking forward to the pics.

Did you stop by 2112 Percussion while you were in town?

I didn't. I didn't know it was there. Not that I need to be going there after the money I spent on this set! Thanks for hooking me up with Cameron, Amy!

Ha! I know the feeling. Now you have a reason to come back to Raleigh one day. :)

not to interrupt but I ordered (from DFD) a 2.3 and a 1.6 to the replace a top bent hoop on my old (redone) WFL 6.5 and...
the 1.6 won- showed more of the tone
ok back to cookies & coffee

I tried 1.6 once for a few days and wasn’t a fan. A little too much tone in there ;)

Edit: That said about using 1.6’s on my Standard, my Acro has them and I love it. Not as much as my Standard, but they do work well on it.

I’m tagging you, @Tamboreter , because you asked to see before and after pics, and while I don’t have full detailed pics, Cameron took a few shots of the snare and one of the beds that had gone way out of shape over the decades. There’s only one small before pic, though. Sorry…but getting it done was a last minute decision:

But wait…there’s more…they’re all blinged out now:

That was the move right there. Period correct, schmeriod correct. I can’t do the bass drum since it has a big keystone badge from 83 with a hole that won’t allow it, but keystones also look great…just not next level retro great.

Lastly, I have a question about the 14 x 10 shell, which is a converted concert tom:

The shell is 3 ply maple and it has a granite finish inside. Is that stock? I got it with Classic lugs but I thought they did clear finishes on concert toms, no?

Thank you, Jimmy. You be the man! Love his work, he did a fabulous job from those shots. The chosen finish looks amazing. Nearly made my eyeballs pop out! I know you must be a proud dad of those pups!

Thx Jonathan and Tam! I actually did the Ampeg tolex a couple years ago but just bought a couple more toms over the summer. And if I can figure out how to keep the cats off my tolex while gluing, I’ll finish it ;)

Yep. That's a latter era 3 ply shell. I have a Ludwig 14x10 Thermogloss with a Granitone interior.

Those bearing edges look sweet. Glad it worked out for you (y)

It is totally working out and I haven’t even tuned them for real yet! I will be experimenting this weekend once I can get the cats to let me wrap the 14.
